Mother's Day Miracle Crane Chick V-log. And a Used Nikon 500 PF and More!

What’s Up?

The photography on Tuesday morning was excellent. I spent some quality time with the new crane family. And then, surprisingly, I created a very nice frame or two of the Black-necked Stilts. At one point the female crouched in the water inviting copulation; I was sure that I was gonna be famous as the water was blue and still. But the nearby male was not interested.

On Tuesday afternoon the two chicks were on the grass right next to the pier. They were just standing there, completely tame. So I put the SONY 600 GM on the tripod, added the 2XTC, and concentrated on getting just above the grass but on sun angle and created a few killer head portraits. Both chicks have been feeding ravenously with the adults leading the way; I am thrilled to report that both are doing quite well.

Recently, I had two fly-by wood Ducks and two Semipalmated Plovers; the latter, an ILE first for me.

The comments on the freedom of speech/COVID-19/Plandemic posts continue to pour in. Many are incredibly interesting. I have too many favorites to single any out, but I would suggest that interested folks re-visit. I love the very few folks, who, after 3 posts out of 3019 dealing with freedom of speech and the virus, write that they are never coming back to the blog to learn about bird photography. Man, you gotta love it.

Today’s V-log is about 14 1/2 minutes long. It started at almost 17 minutes and I then spent a half-hour cutting out more than three minutes of throat-clearing, hemming and hawing, and pregnant pauses. There are many, many lessons in the video. As always questions and comments are welcome. Enjoy. And be safe.

Gear Questions and Advice

Too many folks attending BAA IPTs and dozens of photographers whom I see in the field and on BPN, are–out of ignorance–using the wrong gear especially when it comes to tripods and more especially, tripod heads… Please know that I am always glad to answer your gear questions via e-mail. Those questions might deal with systems, camera bodies, accessories, and/or lens choices and decisions.

Mother’s Day Miracle Crane Chick V-log

Click on the play triangle above to spend a good part of Sunday, May 10 with me as I photographed a one-day old Sandhill Crane chick and observed its tiny, helpless, just-hatched nest-mate. I need to emphasize that the cloudy weather that day was the biggest blessing of all. Had it been a clear sunny day, photography would have been nearly impossible. Watch the video to learn how I was able to deal with all the clutter thanks to the giant soft-box of a sky. Along the way, you will pick up dozens of great bird and nature photography tips.

  • Hi Artie,
I just watched you vlog on the new nest. Some of those shots are really lovely. I particularly like the one of the Chick between Mum’s legs and the one with the chick level with her breast and looking up to her face, with her bill tip showing. I would not crop out her bill, if it was my shot. As Denise Ippolito said of one of her Japanese crane shots, the other bird tells the story. Also loved the ones with the chick walking toward the camera. No problem for me with grass showing in foreground ahead of the subject: I like that depth of scene.

As for comments and discussions on SARSCOV2 – as with any subject, we are all best off if we can talk to each other without running from opinions we don’t share. This is a complex situation and for sure we will look back and see the bad calls, but for now, we all have to do what we think is the best with the information we have. Stay safe Artie,

    Love from across the pond,
    Clive

Personally, I am totally amazed by the many negative comments re your airing of your thoughts and feelings re the Pandemic. I find most of it fascinating reading, whether I agree with some or all of it, or not. I have learnt many things from you, for example, products that can help your immune system, etc etc…. just as I have picked up several tips from you re non-photographic subjects over the years.

I am not your normal follower…. I am an absolute novice re photography, despite have bought many a ‘good’ DSLR & lenses over the years when I could afford to…. I never did get beyond ‘Auto’… just sheer laziness. Now retired, I’ve sold all the good stuff, but determined to learn again on my second-hand Sony with it’s poor kit lenses! Nevertheless, I have been following you for years as I just love looking at your images (apart from the blurs!), your journeys and your experiences with various camera manufacturers. I will continue to do so, all the while wishing I could afford one of your wonderful tours, but even the UK based one is far beyond my means and anyway, even if I could, an elderly novice like myself would be way out of her depth amongst all the ‘long, white lens brigade”!! I am quite a good Photoshop user though, and have really learned loads of useful tips from you

I digress; Artie, it’s your website, it’s your blog….. you can say or post anything you like & people can choose what they want to read…. I certainly won’t be jumping ship!

Thanks for your comments, Maggi. But do not forget that blurs or often honored in the major international contests 🙂

The BAA “Used Gear” is a gold mine of solid gear, fairly priced – translated: BAA prices are a fraction of inflated ‘online’ market prices.

RE your Sony: c2010 camera technology and manufacturing improved dramatically and the performance curve is almost vertical since. But for the casual user who takes their time and picks their opportunities there are great images to be made … and money to be saved.

If your ‘second hand’ Sony is of recent vintage you could be amazed at the difference lenses and processing can make.

Your Sandhiill with chicks video and narrative is simply Superb.
