What’s Up?

After several days of work, I sent a final review copy of the almost-finished RawDigger e-Guide to Patrick Sparkman via Hightail last night.

Gear Questions and Advice

Too many folks attending BAA IPTs and dozens of photographers whom I see in the field and on BPN, are–out of ignorance–using the wrong gear especially when it comes to tripods and more especially, tripod heads… Please know that I am always glad to answer your gear questions via e-mail. The Situation

I was in my new SUV. It was early and it was dark. I had to stay on thread because of all the rain. As the cranes were a good distance away. I do not like to get out of the vehicle when the birds are standing in one spot and preening because they will usually walk away if I do that so I added the 1.4X TC and raised the ISO as needed to get Zebras on the bird’s white chin.

As you can see in the Photo Mechanic screen capture above, there were two main problems with the original:

1- The bird is much too tight in the frame
2- There is a light-toned blade of grass in the background sticking out of the leading edge of the bird’s right wing.

Note the Photo Mechanic histogram. With the image properly mega-Exposed to the Right (m-ETTR), it looks very washed out (as it should be). This is done to minimize noise, maximize image quality, best utilize the dynamic range of your camera’s sensor, and attain the highest possible level of shadow detail in your RAW files in every situation. In addition, your RAW files will contain more tonal information, feature smooth transitions between tones. And your optimized images will feature rich, accurate color. I have really improved my exposures since I began working with RawDigger at the start of the pandemic.

Getting Lucky …

I created seven images as the bird flapped very slowly. The last in the series turned out to be best as the bird had turned slowly toward me. And with Upper Center Zone all of the images were sharp on the eye. And by luck, I did not clip a single wing. I was very lucky that the bird was flapping just slowly enough so that the images were sharp at 1/320 second …

Photo Mechanic

Though I now pick my keepers using Capture One Pro 20 and RawDigger, Photo Mechanic still remains an important part of my workflow as it allows me to browse and manage my keepers easily. And it offers easy access to the EXIF that I need to prepare each blog post.

This image was created on Sunday 23 August 2020 at Indian Lake Estates. Working from my SUV, I used the Levered Clamp FlexShooter Pro/Induro/GIT 304L-mounted Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS lens, the Sony FE 1.4x teleconverter, and the blazingly fast AF King, the Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital Camera Body. ISO 3200. Exposure determined by Zebras with ISO on the rear dial: 1/320 sec. at f/5.6 in Manual mode. The exposure was confirmed as perfect by RawDigger. ABW at 7:08am with clouds on the eastern horizon.

Upper Center Zone Continuous AF was active at the moment of exposure and performed to perfection. The active focusing point was on our left side of the bird’s lower neck. Click on the image to enjoy a larger version.

The Image Optimization

After converting the RAW file in Capture One Pro 20, I brought the image into Photoshop and did my basic clean-up work with the Patch Tool, the Spot Healing Brush, and Content-Aware Fill. The next order of business was to expand canvas using the Crop Tool. To do this, begin with the image in the unframed view and hit C for the Crop Tool. Select Original Ratio from the dropdown menu. Make sure that the box for Delete Cropped Pixels is unchecked and that the box for Content-Aware is checked.

For this image I needed a bit more room above, below, and right. Now pull the love handles away from the image on the frame-corners or edges as needed. Now click anywhere on the image to activate the Crop Tool. If you have followed the directions properly, it will look exactly as above. Now click on the checkmark or double-click on the image to execute the Content-Aware Crop. It will take a minute or two to fill in the added canvas. At times, you may have to do a bit of clean-up work as some areas of the added canvas may look quite smudged. Do that with the Patch Tool, Content-Aware Fill, or a Quick Mask or two as needed.
