However you feel about infrared (IR) photography — love it, hate it, or could care less, please leave a comment and let us know why. Those who like it, are invited to let us know their thoughts on which of today’s five featured images they feel is the strongest of the lot.

What’s Up?

On Sunday morning, I played around with a group of adult cranes with the 600 f/4G lens on the ground on a Skimmer II and re-learned an important lesson: sometimes low can be too low … I plan to be using the Skimmer at lot at DeSoto; they are currently out of stock so please e-mail if you would like us to get one for you.

I did two more second edits, JAN & FEB 2021. I deleted another 1501 images. (January must have been a third edit …) You can learn how I pick my first round keepers in the The Laughing Gull/Red Knot (and more) DeSoto Picking Your Keepers Video.

I’ve been swimming every day in a delightfully warm pool. A few weeks ago, I cut back from 64 to 44 lengths and my shoulders have appreciated that change a lot.

Today is Monday 19 April. The weatherman finally got it right. The scattered thunderstorms have been parked over and pounding away at ILE since 3am with no signs of abating any time soon. If they do, I will head down to the lakeshore to check out the puddles. Wherever you are, and whatever you are doing, I hope that you have a great day.

This blog post took about an hour to prepare and makes 117 consecutive days with a new one. When I shot Canon exclusively, I had a ton of fun making landscapes, tree-scapes, and cloud-scapes with a 5D Mark II that had been converted to infrared. The 5D III is a step up from that. These infrared-converted bodies pair well with the 24-105 and any of the 70-200s. artie

The 1DX Mark II is a rugged, blazingly fast Canon professional digital camera body. It features an amazing AF system and high quality image files with great dynamic range. This incredibly versatile zoom lens — with its amazing .98 meter close focus — was my favorite Canon telephoto zoom lens ever. By far. It is great for tight portraits, birds in flight, quasi-macro stuff, and lots more. It sells new for $2399.00 so you can save some hard cash by grabbing Bill’s pretty much new lens now. artie

Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera Body

Ted Keltz is offering a Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera body in like-new condition for a very low $1199.00. A new EOS R5 costs $3899.00. A new EOS R goes for $1799.00. I have had several folks on IPT who used their EOS R bodies with great success using the Standard Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Canon EF super-telephoto lenses, with both TCs! Grabbing Ted’s practically new EOS R would be a great way to get started with Canon mirrorless while saving some handsome dollars. artie

  • Good morning Guru. Hope you’re doing fine.

All these vintage images are of highest class. People call it classics.

Again it’s clear – Old is GOLD.

    Best regards.

These are all great! I can’t find one I don’t like nor one that is much better than the others. Have you ever tried photographing people using the full IR? It gives the skin a creamy texture and naturally eliminates skin blemishes. Shoot someone wearing sunglasses and you will see the eyes clearly (for surveillance?). Lots of fun can be done.

Love the tree, but all inspire me. Have wanted to have a go at infrared but getting a body converted lol have no idea about that.

    Art:

We both love the tree! Actually, I think Stokes and I were on this trip to the Palouse — in any event, we both have pictures of the tree. I like this particular image, especially the dark mountain on the right, peaking over the fields. It balances the dark of the tree.

I love the ethereal quality of B&W infrared images. Solitary tree is my favorite. I have converted an old Canon 20 D to infrared and enjoy doing landscape images with it.

  • avatar Gary Meyer

    I Love them all sorry

  • avatar James Saxon

The bridge is my favorite. I enjoy IR but find processing it a pain.

  • avatar John Johnson

    I vote for the tree.

  • avatar David Policansky

The photos look like high-contrast prints from Ilford FP3 or similarb&w film. I like them, particularly Denise’s tree.

  • All strong images, but my favorites are #3 (railroad bridge) and #5 (Bosque). If #3 were mine, I’d try darkening the blues to increase the contrast in the sky. Similarly, with image #2 I’d try reintroducing a hint of color in the sky, maybe 5% (assuming there was color there), but that’s coming from someone without an IR camera who only does occasional conversions in PS. Love IR and B&W in general. Doesn’t work for many images, but when it does, I often prefer it to the color original.

    Image #4

  • avatar Lou Kaufman

I prefer Image #4––the clouds, mountains, and grasses are spectacular––and the birds put it over the top! I use a Life Pixel converted Sony A6000 for my IR work. Very much fun.

  • avatar Jay

Image 3, the railroad bridge. I like the perspective given by the clouds, the way it moves the eye in conjuction with the bridge.

  • Love ’em all! And love IR photography. My plan is to convert my D800 to IR when I upgrade but waiting to see what Nikon come up with in terms of mirrorless bodies.

  • #4 is striking and very emotional in its loneliness and sadness. So I wouldn’t hang it on my wall. I need positive emotions. But it is very impressive. Usually black and white and infrared aren’t my favorites because I like color so much.

  • avatar Mike Cristina

I’ve always been intrigued by infrared but never wanted to spend the money to convert a camera body, and never had an extra body to convert. I always thought I’d wait until the conversion of a regular image could be done in the computer. I prefer image three because of the clouds.

    Mike
