Photoshop Preference corruption is well documented on the internet. Google "photoshop preference corruption". I have had this happen more than once. Once you get your preferences rebuilt, you should save a copy of the files. Then if they ever get corrupted again you can replace the files in the photoshop general preference folder location without having to reenter them. This problem can occur in CS3, CS4, Cs5, etc. For windows 7 the preference files are located in the following location:

General Settings:

Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

Adobe document showing the location of all Photoshop CS5 Preference file locations:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82893.html

The Preferences we are dealing with are called "General Settings"

<font id=comreply>Hey Jon, Thanks a stack for your most helpful comment. I shall back up my preferences today. <font>artie

I certainly appreciate all this dialogue regarding CS5. I've routinely updated my Photoshop with every new version until this last one. Makes me feel better about waiting until I update to a new computer before replacing the CS4 (which incidentally hasn't given me any probs)!
