Yes, you need to be on your game compositionally when only the center AF point (with or without Expand) is available.  Much better to be on a tripod then....  And the Mongoose M3.6 is perfect for the 100-400 II.   AF is always slowed with the loss of one stop of lights and image quality is always somewhat degraded.  But today&#039;s lenses are so, so sharp that making professionally sharp images with either TC should be routine for anyone employing excellent sharpness techniques.  artie]]></description>

Single-point and expanded single-point on the 7DII is sometimes a challenge (for me) when going hand-held, but when I photograph birds they like to move when I close in.

I&#039;ve also noticed AF (faster) and image quality (sharper) seems much improved when the TC is not used (though it&#039;s great with the TC attached).

Life is full of trade-offs.
