I agree that renaming inside of LR is a pain. However, it is pretty easy to move folders outside LR and then reconnect them. I’ve done that at times. It is really not restrictive at all; it is just a bit more automated inside LR. I’ve reassigned the drive letter (in Windows) and then reconnected. It is fast and easy. There should not be any “lost effort”.

Ken, can I suggest you set your previews in import to minimal – that brings them in much faster. Also, with the latest versions of OS (particularly Yosemite), and the greater Lightroom requirement, you do need more than 8GB. I have 20GB.
