It sounds as if you need the reach. So the 500 II plus the 1.4X III TC. You do not need the 2X III TC with a 7D II. If you lived in Florida with tame birds it would be a different story. Head to BPN and check out the great work that Avian Moderator Dan Cadieux does with the 500 II and a 7D II.

And at the risk of asking annoying questions… If you only had the money to buy a 500 II to go with a 7D II or to buy a 5D IV to go with the 100-400 II, what would the choice be? I’ve always heard go with the best glass, but the 100-400 II isn’t exactly bad glass.

I’ve been doing photography for over a decade, mostly as a walk-around birder. I’m extremely interested in focusing on photography more and getting the extra reach of the 500. I also would like better performance in dark places.
