The sweet light makes the ibis really pop against all that dark background. Small in the frame is another reason. The light makes the avocet pop against all the dark water and i like the side lighting. The ripples in the water are nice as well.

b. I much prefer image #2 because of the position of the bird and the lovely lighting on the bird. For me, the avocet really stands out from the background whereas I am drawn away from the ibis from the distracting foliage in the image.
