Hi Fred, Thanks for your complex question :)

The 7D II should make great images with either lens with or without the 1.4X TC. Do a search on the blog for Daniel Cadieux or see his work on BPN, all with the 7D II. Better to work without the TC with the 100-400. The 5D IV would do the same and you would have larger files that could stand up to cropping. I preferred the 5D IV to the 7D II but Daniel does not and his images are amazing.

Please remember two things:

1-most lenses and TCs are sharper than most photographers including me :)
2- if you buy any new gear please remember to write for advice or use my affiliate links.

I have the canon F/4 DO II lens and and the 100mm-400mm IS II. What is your opinion using a 1.6 Crop Canon Mark 7D ii camera in lieu of a Teleconverter vs. using the Mark5d IV with a 2X III Teleconverter for birding? Or even the Canon TC 1.4 X III..

Would the Mark 7D ii have a fast focus plus equal quality picture?

Thank You
