In terms of acquisition and tracking I see no difference. But there is a difference in terms of buffer depth and rolling shutter problems. This article explains these issues: (https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/sony-vs-sony/a7riii-vs-a9/#3-Autofocus-performance) Hope this helps.

I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on the a9 and the 100-400, especially with the 2x tele. Specifically, because I wouldn't think a camera could autofocus with a 2x tele on a f/5.6 lens. If the a9 can focus well with the 100-400 and 2x tele, I'm impressed! I figured Sony's a9 and 2x might require the 400 f/2.8 to function well.

I would submit a guess on your focus point choice but my answer mirrors Tony Z's. I know my Nikon bodies struggle on any lens and tele combo that adds up to f/8. Be it f/4 x 2 or f/5.6 x 1.4. You can move the focus point away from the center but when you do locking focus is hit or miss, mostly miss.
