Fill flash at -3 stops with the Better Beamer (should have been -1 stop). <\/p>\n<p>65-Point Automatic selection\/AI Servo\/Rear Focus AF as framed was active at the moment of exposure. The AF system performed perfectly activating two AF points on and just in front of the bird&#8217;s eye. Back then it was a really rare bird in San Diego and hundreds of folks came to see it and check it off their life lists. Listing is a big deal for many California birders. The image wound up on the cover of what I believe was and probably still is the Western Field Ornithologist&#8217;s quarterly magazine. IAC, in recent years, juvenile birds of this species show up every year. It is always fun to spot them on the cliff and try to figure out the very best perspective. They like to tuck themselves well in on the rocky ledges. To photograph this one I was shooting down on the bird at a steep angle. Once I had the image framed the bird obliged with a nice wing stretch and a stare right at me. <\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdsasart-blog.com\/baa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ANIM-GIF-Masked-Booby.gif\" class=\"aligncenter\" \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Before and After<\/h3>\n<p>After converting the RAW file well lighter in DPP 4 I brought the image into Photoshop. A small crop from the left and above was no problem for the sharp 5DS R file. Cliff clean-up was done primarily with the Patch Tool and the Spot Healing Brush. I selected the bird carefully with the Quick Selection Tool, feathered the selection, and then saved it. Then I put it on its own layer and ran a layer of my NIK 25\/25 recipe. Note the positive effect on the brown feathers. Then I followed Arash&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ni.neatvideo.com\/?linkID=p8791\" target=\"_blank\">NeatImage<\/a> noise reduction tutorial from the <a href=\"http:\/\/birdsasart-shop.com\/the-professional-post-processing-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professional Guide to Post Processing<\/a> to a tee with just a small amount (the Y slider set to 50) and applied that amount of NR twice to the background. <\/p>\n<p>Everything above plus tons more is of course detailed in my <a href=\"http:\/\/birdsasart-shop.com\/digital-basics-file\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Basics File,<\/a> an instructional PDF that is sent via e-mail. With annual visits spanning more than three decades I have lot of experience there&#8230;. <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<h3>2017 San Diego 4 1\/2-DAY BIRDS AS ART Instructional Photo-Tour (IPT) JAN 11 thru and including the morning session on JAN 15: 4 1\/2 days: $1999.<\/p>\n<p>(Limit: 10\/openings 8)<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>Meet and Greet at 7:00pm on the evening before the IPT begins; Tuesday 1\/10\/17.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Join me in San Diego to photograph the spectacular breeding plumage Brown Pelicans with their fire-engine red and olive green bill pouches; Brandt&#8217;s and Double-crested Cormorants; breeding plumage Wood and Ring-necked Duck; other duck species possible including Lesser Scaup, Redhead, and Surf Scoter; a variety of gulls including Western, California, and the gorgeous Heerman&#8217;s, all in full breeding plumage; shorebirds including Marbled Godwit, Willet, Sanderling and Black-bellied Plover; many others possible including Least, Western, and Spotted Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Black and Ruddy Turnstone, Semipalmated Plover, and Surfbird; Harbor Seals (depending on the current regulations) and California Sea Lions; and Bird of Paradise flowers. And as you can see by studying the two IPT cards there are some nice bird-scape and landscape opportunities as well. <\/p>\n<p>With gorgeous subjects just sitting there waiting to have their pictures taken, photographing the pelicans on the cliffs is about as easy as nature photography gets. With the winds from the east almost every morning there is usually some excellent flight photography. And the pelicans are almost always doing something interesting: preening, scratching, bill pouch cleaning, or squabbling.
