I had been planning on bringing my Nikon 600 VR and photographing them off the tripod at 840mm with the TC-E14 in place; the cliffs are about 70 feet high so it is a long way down to the birds. But I thought, “What if they are not bathing in close today?” and headed down the steps with only my SONY gear. Once again, the birds were bathing about an hour before the sun would climb over the hill to the northeast so I thought about going back to the car for my Nikon big gun. Instead, I added the 2X teleconverter to get to 800mm.

As it was way too dark to even think about creating sharp images and because bathing pelican blurs are usually a lot nicer than the sharp images, I set up for blurs using S (Tv) mode and Auto ISO. I sat down and used the knee-pod technique — my left forearm resting atop the left thigh of my bent left knee — in hopes of getting the eye relatively sharp. That strategy worked fairly well. I made a long series of images and kept only two. This one was my favorite as the bird was angled in the frame.

ngg_shortcode_3_placeholder

An unsharpened 100% crop of today’s featured image

Your browser does not support iFrame.

The Image Optimization

During the RAW conversion, I fine-tuned the BLUEs, the CYANs, and the MAGENTAS under the Color Editor to come up with a water color that I liked. Every time that I convert an image in Capture One I marvel at the simplicity of the process. Once I had the image in Photoshop, I went with somewhat of a pano crop and did some Eye Doctor work. I finished the image off with my NIK 30/30 recipe and a Contrast Mask on the bird’s face on a single layer. I love the resulting painterly look as seen in the unsharpened 100% crop immediately above.

ngg_shortcode_4_placeholder

The BIRDS AS ART Current Workflow e-Guide (Digital Basics II).

You can order your copy from the BAA Online Store here, by sending a Paypal for $40 here, or by calling Jim or Jennifer weekdays at 863-692-0906 with your credit card in hand.

The BIRDS AS ART Current Workflow e-Guide (Digital Basics II)

Everything mentioned above (except for Capture One RAW conversions) and tons more — including all of my personalized Keyboard Shortcuts — is covered in detail in the BIRDS AS ART Current Workflow e-Guide (Digital Basics II), an instructional PDF that is sent via e-mail. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail
.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance for both big international trips and US-based IPTs is highly recommended as we never know what life has in store for us. I strongly recommend that you purchase quality travel insurance. Travel Insurance Services offers a variety of plans and options. Included with the Elite Option or available as an upgrade to the Basic & Plus Options you can also purchase Cancel for Any Reason Coverage that expands the list of reasons for your canceling to include things such as sudden work or family obligation and even a simple change of mind. My family and I use and depend on the great policies offered by TIS whenever we travel. You can learn more here: Travel Insurance Services. Do note that many plans require that you purchase your travel insurance within 14 days of our cashing your deposit check or running your credit card. Whenever purchasing travel insurance, be sure to read the fine print carefully even when dealing with reputable firms like TSI.

Variety is surely the spice of life in San Diego. We often arrive at the cliffs a full hour before anyone else shows up to check out the landscape and seascape opportunities.

If In Doubt …

If in doubt about using the BAA B&H affiliate link correctly, you can always start your search by clicking here.
