The first time that I reached for my cell phone, I realized that I had left it on the charger in my X5. It should be arriving via Fed Ex before 9am today :-). That was a first.

Today is Tuesday 8 May 2026. I see Dr. Poupolo this afternoon and will likely need to have some pre-surgical testing done. Alissa and husband Ajinyiaz are flying to Spain on Thursday for a ten-day vacation. I am staying at their home it Ronkonkoma and hanging with their younger son Idris. I hope to get in some bird photography at Nickerson Beach both before and several days after the trigger finger surgery that I hope will be done next week. I have lots of work to catch up on so a brief respite from 2 years of nonstop morning photography will not be the worst thing in the world. Whatever you opt to do, I hope that you too choose to have fun and enjoy life. Conditions were perfect for flight photography. There was only one problem: very few birds. Nothing flew in or by for the first half hour and I was itching to check out the Osprey nest on Lantana. I set a time limit: I would leave at 7:30am. Just before I departed a single BBWD flew in well to my left and left of sun angle. I was glad that I was in full frame mode as I struggled to keep the bird in the frame. You can see the original framing in the YouTube video below.

This one was a bit under-exposed as the bird was well off sun angle. A little known fact: the light right down sun angle is about 1/3-stop brighter than it is 20° to either side.

Note: After the crop, I moved the welcoming committee, the two duck heads along the bottom frame edge, to the left to improve the compositional balance.

ngg_shortcode_3_placeholder

This image was created on 16 May 2026 by yours truly at Indian Lake Estates, FL. And, as the nest is a huge one, there is no sign of the platform’s boards in the images. As far as the timing of my visit, it was perfect. This bird’s two siblings had already fledged leaving just a single bird in the nest and I knew that the bird would be exercising its wings every few minutes. The wing was would have the bird facing me to some degree. At first, still working in full frame mode, I set up a bit too close to the nest and wound up clipping the wings. So, I moved back about five yards and waited for the next exercise session to begin. This was a plus as it reduced the angle of inclination.

ngg_shortcode_4_placeholder

This image was created on 16 May 2026 by yours truly at Indian Lake Estates, FL.
