Plus One! blog post here, everyone who commented went for the squabbling whistling ducks image as their top pick and gave lots of good reasons: the action, the compositional balance, and the triangular image design with the out-of-focus purple flower. Tom Redd covered all the bases when he wrote:

I love image number 2. The action; the fact that the eyes are visible on both; the lift off of the inferior duck and associated water droplets coming off the feet; the superior duck showing both the ventral and dorsal views of the wings; the clean background; the colors; and the touch of purple from the flower make this image my preference of the two. Lots to like here.

I agree 100%. But I did have this to say about the white sky Osprey image:

For me, there is a lot to like about Image #1. The drooped wings, the begging posture, the open bill, the pink tongue, the lack of shadows, a great look at those sharp talons, the pristine juvenal plumage including the streaking on the breast that makes it a female, and the sharpness. I consider it anything but a run-of-the-mill Florida blah-sky image. Not to mention that I love white skies.

What’s Up?

I did well on Friday morning as the forecast southwest wind died for a while and then stayed southeast until nearly 9:00am. The young Ospreys are spending less time perching near the nest every day. I got to the pier early and had lots of flight and other action with the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. Saturday morning was more of the same but with fewer ducks. I did make my best-ever Limpkin flight image and two spectacular frames of a Red-winged Blackbird harassing a whistling duck in flight. Photos and lessons soon.

Huge thanks to Michael De Rosa and Nora Kane for using a BAA affiliate link to purchase their Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM lens and to Kevin Hice for getting his souped up to the max MacBook Pro M5 for $7598.00 (with three years of Apple Care).

Today is Monday 22 June 2026. The forecast is again calling for mostly sunny skies with a light SW wind. I will of course be headed down to the lake early for some bird photography and a walk. That has continued now that I am back at ILE. Generally, I walk about 1 1/2 miles after my morning photo session and then do a second shorter walk late in the afternoon. While I love carrying a lens with me, that is not a great situation when you are walking for health as it disrupts your gait and your rhythm.

On Wednesday afternoon past it was blessedly cloudy when I hit the pier. With the extremely low water levels, more and more birds are abandoning the bay south of the pier and are foraging and loafing north of the pier. Walking west, a lightbulb went off in my head. I realized that with the sun setting well north of west at this time of year that there might be some good silhouette opportunities just before sunset. So, I grabbed my iPhone and creating the scene-setting image above.

ngg_shortcode_1_placeholder

This image was created by yours truly on 18 June 2026 from the pier at Indian Lake Estates, FL. I grabbed the 400-800 and feeling a bit lazy, opted to leave the tripod in the car. That was a mistake that I will not repeat. So, hand holding the 4-8 I walked out a bit on the pier and got on some of the Limpkins that were feeding in the bay on the north side of the pier. Along the way, I set up for Shutter Priority mode with AUTO ISO and Exposure Compensation on the Thumb Dial, my go to approach for sunrise and sunset silhouettes. The trick then is to line the subject up with the maximum color. I had one good chance and as the birds were distant, I hit the trash can button to toggle from full frame to APS-C crop mode.

Within moments of pressing the shutter button a few times, the muted sun disappeared behind a huge cloud bank on the western horizon. The color was gone. I created about 1100 images in less than 30 minutes while enjoying a very nice sunset. As I headed back to my SUV in the parking circle, there were five Common Nighthawks cavorting above the my head. I will be returning every night when there is even a remote chance of sunset color.

I did learn two new things on my Sunday evening visit:

1- There will be chances on flight silhouettes, possible with incoming whistling ducks.

2- After the sun dips below the horizon, the Limpkins leave the area by flying to the south over the pier. This should provide some good flight silhouette blur opportunities.

Additional Learning

Note that in the approximately 13 minutes between Image #2 and Image #3 the light level dropped. And the reflected colors intensified. So, even though I went to a slower shutter speed, the ISO doubled.

ngg_shortcode_4_placeholder

The BIRDS AS ART SONY 400-800mm f/6.3-9 G Super-telephoto Zoom Lens Guide

The Vastly Under-appreciated Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

When I borrowed this lens from Sony, I assumed that at 5.45 pounds it was too heavy to handhold for long and that at f/8 at the long end (800mm,) it was too slow for most bird photography applications. In short, I did not want to like the lens. After a month of using it, I cannot live without it. After returning the loaner, I was miraculously able to get my own from Bedfords on 16 April 2025. In this guide I share everything that I have learned about using the 400-800. For best results, you need to know exactly what you are doing to get the most out of this zoom lens. It would be best, therefore, to consider and study the material in the guide so that you can begin making great images with your new lens.

You will learn how to deal with the relatively show apertures: f/6.3, f/7.1, and f/8 when working in Manual mode.

You will learn how to ensure that you are working at the widest aperture by working in Shutter Priority mode with AUTO ISO.

If you are able to hand hold the lens, you will learn proper hand holding techniques.

If you can’t, you will learn when, why, and how to employ other options.
