What’s Up?

I finished my program for tomorrow night and am excited about the presentation. I hope to see you there.

Orlando Camera Club Program Sponsored By Bedford Camera

On February 25, 2019, I will be presenting “Lessons from the Field – BIRDS AS ART Style” for the Orlando Camera Club. They told me that they did not want to see beautiful images as they would rather learn. I told them that I would need to show them lots of beautiful images during the course of the lessons. 🙂 I have been having a ton of fun for three weeks creating this brand new program. The meeting begins at 6:15; my program is scheduled for 6:15 – 8:00pm at the Marks Senior Center, 99 E Marks Street, Orlando, FL 32803. The meeting is free and open to the public. If you learned about the program through the blog be sure to come up for a hug.

Huge thanks to Steve Elkins at Bedford Camera for sponsoring my appearance and to Holly Manus for the invitation. Click on the logo-link above or check out the Money Saving Reminder feature immediately below to get acquainted with Bedford.

From the OCC website here:

Arthur Morris will present “Lessons from the Field – BIRDS AS ART Style”. This slide-illustrated lecture will feature hundred’s of Artie’s spectacular photographs. As he shares images from his favorite locations around the globe he will be telling us about the birds and other creatures that he photographs and about the equipment and techniques that he uses to create his images. Topics to be covered include getting close to free and wild birds, flight photography, getting the right exposure, and image design. A selection of books and CDs will be available.

Lazy, Lazy, Lazy

I posted the image immediately below and nobody even ventured a guess. Now is your second chance.

Please get in the habit of clicking on all horizontal images to see a larger inexplicably sharper version.

A New System/Focal Length/ISO Quiz

As I have not yet loaded NeatImage onto the new laptop, noise reduction to the background only was applied using Filter > Blur > Surface Blur.

Be sure to click on the image to see the larger version before getting into the water. Then, go ahead:

SONY or Nikon?

What was the focal length?

What ISO did I use? (Yes, it was Auto but don’t be a wise guy.)

Comments on perceived image quality are welcome as well.

    OK, Artie, here we go:
    SCWAG, Sony, around 300mm iso 2000, 1/2500 at 5.6
    Nice shot. All the best.

Thanks Guido. Excellent guesses. What is SCWAG? Ah, I just realized, some kind of wild ass guess. Which kind?

      with love, artie

      • avatar Guido Bee

There are at least 2 versions of the SCWAG: Scientific and Super then Colossal Wild Ass Guess. Can be used interchangeably as desired. There may be more versions.
        Be well.

Ok, I’ll bite. You used the Nikon 850 at 600 mm. Iso at 800 and shutter speed at 1/2000 and apperature at 5.6. Also, you were wearing a hat and smoking a cigar. Ha

Very good. When I was eleven my Dad asked me if I want to take a puff. (He was a four-pack a day man after taking up smoking in WWII to keep warm as they did not have the proper gloves and clothing in the Aleutians …) I sucked on the cigarette and nearly choked to death. I never took another puff. Smart man 🙂

      with love, artie

  • Artie:

Here are my specs for the photo…

Focal length 400mm, shutter speed 1/1250, aperture f/7.1, ISO 1600, camera Sony A9.

    Nice photo!

Take care and see you soon!!!

  • Hi Art,

I am guessing that because the trees are fairly in-focus, that you were shooting a shorter focal length – 300 – 400mm (Sony). The lighting, if the scattered clouds in the background are any indication, would drive the ISO up – maybe 800 to 1200. The image quality does not seem to be up to Nikon D850 standards so Sony again (though my 2012 iMac monitor is far from retina quality).

Artie: I have no idea, but you asked for guesses. Here they are.

SONY or Nikon? I have absolutely no idea, but I have a 50% chance of being right, so I’ll guess Sony.

What was the focal length? The trees in the (back?)ground are out of focus, so I’m guessing it was pretty long. But the bird is fairly small in the frame, so maybe not so long. I guesses SOny so I’ll guess you were at 400 mm.

What ISO did I use? (Yes, it was Auto but don’t be a wise guy.) Again, no idea, but I’ll guess 800.
