Remarkable ... A SONY 600 GM in Stock! And Canon Bargains!

What’s Up?

I am packing like a fiend today, WED 19 FEB 2020. Jim will be taking me to an Orlando Airport motel late this afternoon. I fly to Homer on Delta via Seattle and Anchorage. It is a little bit of a challenge to make Homer by plane in a single day but if I make my (legal) 62-minute connection in Seattle it will be a piece of cake. But it will be a very long travel day as I have a 4-hour 29-minute layover in Anchorage … Wish me luck.

I was glad to learn that the sale of Steeve Leimberg’s Canon 600 II is pending.

Selling Your Used Photo Gear Through BIRDS AS ART

Selling your used (or like-new) photo gear through the BAA Blog is a great idea. We charge only a 5% commission. One of the more popular used gear for sale sites charged a minimum of 20%. Plus assorted fees! Yikes. They went out of business. And e-Bay fees are now up to 13%. Please understand that e-Bay prices are bogus. And the same is true of the prices of used gear including my dear friends at B&H and the other mega-outfits. They offer you pennies and then try to sell the stuff to ignorant folks for ridiculously high prices. With their huge international exposure, they occasionally find someone …

The minimum item price here is $500 (or less for a $25 fee). If you are interested please scroll down here or shoot us an e-mail with the words Items for Sale Info Request cut and pasted into the Subject line :). Stuff that is priced fairly — I offer pricing advice to those who agree to the terms — usually sells in no time flat. Over the past year, we have sold many many dozens of items. Do know that prices on some items like the EOS-1D Mark IV, the 5Ds and 5Ds R, the old Canon 500mm, the EOS-7D, the Canon 200-400 with internal extender, and the original 400mm DO lens have been dropping steadily. Most recently the price of used Canon 600mm f/L IS II lenses have been dropping like a rock with the introduction of the 600 III. The prices garnered for used Canon gear has tanked completely as demand has dropped tremendously. It is ironic that for decades Canon gear had very strong resale value …

Note: all BAA Used Gear sales include insured ground shipping via UPS to lower 48 US addresses only. Others who live elsewhere are invited to e-mail the seller for shipping surcharge info. Sellers should charge you only the difference between shipping to the farthest US location from their home and the charge to a non-lower-48 address.

Both Patrick Sparkman and I used and loved the 7D Mark II until about four years ago when we both committed to using full-frame Canon bodies. We both made some truly great images with it. Two of my three 2016 Nature’s Best honored entries were created with the 7D II, one still, and one video. One thing is for sure: the 7D Mark II is the greatest value ever in a digital camera body. artie

The Canon EF-mount atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF from Tokina is a versatile ultra-wide zoom well-suited for landscape, architecture, and interior shooting. Characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, consistent brightness is afforded throughout the zoom range and benefits working in available lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a series of aspherical and low dispersion elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity. Individual elements are also multi-coated to resist flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in bright or backlit conditions. Complementing the optics, this lens features a One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism for fast changing between AF and MF settings, and an internal focusing design is used for responsive focusing performance. Gear Questions and Advice

Too many folks attending BAA IPTs and dozens of photographers whom I see in the field and on BPN, are–out of ignorance–using the wrong gear especially when it comes to tripods and more especially, tripod heads… Please know that I am always glad to answer your gear questions via e-mail. Those questions might deal with systems, camera bodies, accessories, and/or lens choices and decisions.

This image was created on the Cozad Ranch in Lynn, TX on April 18, 2005. I used the hand held Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM lens and the long-defunct Canon EOS-1D Mark II. ISO 640: 1/1000 sec. at f/4. At 11:02am on a cloudy morning.

The redone optimized file for Crested Caracara landing

The Backstory

After I did the program at ILE two weeks ago a lady named Sally, who works in the office there, e-mailed asking if I have any images of caracaras. She wanted a 4X6 inch print for her husband’s birthday. I sent her a few screen-captures and she liked today’s featured image. We agreed on a price and Jim kindly found the optimized file. He copied it to our PC > MAC > PC hard drive. I opened it in Photoshop and was amazed to see how noisy the underwings were. I asked Jim to find the matching RAW file and he did that quickly. (Note: Be sure to save all of your RAW files. Be sure to save them with the file number and the location. And be sure that the file number and the location remain part of the file name for your optimized file. With those steps in your workflow, it is always easy to locate various versions of a given image. The magic file name here was _H2D2400 Cozad Ranch, Lynn, TX.)

The RAW file was originally processed in DDP 3, the predecessor of DPP 4. Purely out of curiosity, I decided to re-convert the RAW file in Capture One. I upped the exposure a bit, adjusted the white and black points, and used only the default noise reduction values. I was astounded to note that the horrific color noise (along with a bit of luminance noise) had been completely eliminated by the Capture One RAW conversion.

Noise in Old File

As you can see, the color noise in the original image was really bad despite the fact that the RAW file was only about 1/2-stop under-exposed.

Noise in New File

As you can see, the noise in the new file was pretty much eliminated completely during the Capture One RAW Conversion, again, using only the default noise reductions (on an image created with a 25-year old camera body. To me, the difference is quite remarkable. You can learn more about Capture One in the Capture One Pro 12 Simplified MP4 Video here.

Photoshop Improvements

Note that after the RAW conversion in C-1, I brought the TIF file into Photoshop and eliminated the YELLOW cast in the WHITEs and cleaned up the WHITEs as well. For the former, I created a new layer, reduced the YELLOW saturation, and painted the bill and the legs back in via a Regular Layer Mask. Removing the YELLOW from the orange bill and legs had made the image far too dull. Again working on a new layer, I cleaned up the WHITEs by taking BLACK out of the WHITEs in Selective Color …

Beautiful image and it’s remarkable how great some of one’s old images can be. You illustrated how new processing of older RAW images can yield magical results. Have a safe and fulfilling trip. Wish I could have joined you.
