I will be heading out early today — Wednesday 15 JULY 2020. Mid-July? Are you kidding me?
Thanks to the folks who commented on the color or B&W question in the Some Respite From the Heat; this would make a nice jigsaw puzzle. On Not Letting the Old Man In … And a Used Like-New Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens! blog post here. Opinions were divided 50-50. I far prefer the color version as the yellow leaves remind me that my favorite time at Bosque is early in the season when there are still some yellow leaves on the cottonwoods.
With one sign-up already, I am really going to try to make Bosque work, hoping that it will be the first-ever socially-distanced IPT … The very best news is that the 2020 Festival of the Cranes has been canceled so we will be able to visit on what are usually the perfect dates! Do check out my Bosque Gallery here to see the creative possibilities.

Both Patrick Sparkman and I used and loved the 7D Mark II until about four years ago when we both committed to using full-frame Canon bodies. We both made some truly great images with it. Two of my three 2016 Nature’s Best honored entries were created with the 7D II, one still, and one video. One thing is for sure: the 7D Mark II is the greatest value ever in a digital camera body. If you have any doubts, type the word “Cadieux” in the little search box top right and follow any or all of the links to see the great images that BPN Avian Moderator Dan Cadieux has created with his 7D series bodies … artie

Gear Questions and Advice
Too many folks attending BAA IPTs and dozens of photographers whom I see in the field and on BPN, are–out of ignorance–using the wrong gear especially when it comes to tripods and more especially, tripod heads… Please know that I am always glad to answer your gear questions via e-mail. Those questions might deal with systems, camera bodies, accessories, and/or lens choices and decisions.

The Situation
On the morning of Saturday past, I returned to the corner of Flamingo Drive and Bougainville Drive — just six blocks from my home — to check out the three Grassleaf Barbara’s Buttons blossoms. Two of the three flowers had a Green Garden Spider on it. I spent a good thirty minutes photographing the larger of the two spiders. The third blossom had a smaller brown spider on it; I passed on that one, opting to concentrate my efforts on the largest more colorful subject.

Which of today’s two featured images is the strongest? Do you like the tighter view in Image #1 or the wider view in Image #2? Do let us know why. Feel free to comment on the two image designs as well.
Depth-of-Field Question
Despite the fact that the aperture probably used for Image #1 was smaller than the aperture used for Image #2, much more of the spider is in sharp focus in Image #2. Why?

The very best news is that the 2020 Festival of the Cranes has been canceled so we will be able to visit on what are usually the perfect dates!
I quit going to Bosque several years ago as conditions had worsened each year for several seasons running. In 2018, things had improved dramatically and in 2019 the photography was great. Simply put, I know Bosque better than anyone. Join me to learn how wind and sky conditions influence bird photography, how to create dramatic sunrise and sunset silhouettes, how to be in the right place at the right time, and how to create contest-winning blurs. As usual, you will learn to get the right exposure every time, to use your camera’s AF system to create pleasing, balanced image designs, and to improve your flight photography skills.
We should get to photograph many thousands of Snow Geese, more than a few blast-offs, some Ross’s Geese, and lots of Sandhill Cranes in the water, taking flight and flying. Depending on local conditions we may get to shoot some ducks: point-blank American Wigeon and Wood Duck. With any luck, we might enjoy sunrises and sunsets that leave you in tears. Live, eat, and breathe photography with one of (if not the) world’s premier photographic educators at one of his very favorite locations on the planet. Top-notch Photoshop instruction. Join me to learn to think like a pro and to recognize situations and to anticipate them based on the weather. Every time we make a move, I will let you know why. When you get home, applying what you learned will prove to be invaluable.
Lunch is included.

I will be heading out early this morning — Monday 13 July 2020, still concentrating on wildflowers. We have had torrential rains here every afternoon for the past week. The pool is close to overflowing and it is not advisable to drive on the fields down by the lake as the chances of getting stuck in the mud and wet grass are high (and will be for some time).
On Not Letting the Old Man In …
Many folks reacted to the Don’t Let the Old Man In video in the recent blog post here. If you missed it, you might wish to check it out, especially if you are getting on in years.
I remember getting back from my last Galapagos trip in early August 2019. I was exhausted and laid on the couch for about a week. I began thinking that if I continued it would not be long until they were putting me in a box. So I got back in the pool, started walking every day, and returned to my cardio bursts program. Since then, I have lost about ten pounds and added a daily walk on the StairMaster. I have gotten out to photograph every single morning since I began isolating on 22 March 2020. If you are not doing much and think that you are doomed, I urge you to begin with perhaps a short walk every day and go from there. At age 62 my younger sister Arna chose to let the old woman in, and laid in her bed at the rehab center until she died … Life is about choices. What’s your choice?
Please Remember
If you enjoy and learn from the blog, please remember to use one of my two affiliate programs when purchasing new gear. Doing so will not cost you a single penny and if you use Bedfords, you will save at least $50.00 on all orders greater than $1000.00. In these crazy times — I am out at least forty to sixty thousand dollars so far due to COVID 19 (with lots more to come) — remembering to use my B&H link or shop at Bedfords will help me out a ton and will be greatly appreciated. Overseas folks who cannot order from the US because of import fees, duties, and taxes can always help out by clicking here if they see fit.

This, the lightest, latest, greatest version of the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 lenses, is superb for large mammals in low light and birds at close range. It is superbly sharp alone or with the TC-14E III. It offers the world’s sweetest Boken. As a new goes for $11,196.95 right, you can save a very smooth $3,200 by grabbing Angie’s lens. artie
This super telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 600mm equivalent focal length. Its impressively bright f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective focus techniques. Two fluorite and two extra-low dispersion lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens. Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens’s use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system. The Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds. Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens’ use in inclement conditions. A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations. Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates. This 400 f/2.8 is compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters. B&H

This image was created at Bosque del Apache NWR on the 2019 Return to Bosque IPT. I used the handheld Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens (at at 259mm) and the 61-mega-pixel monster, the Sony Alpha a7R IV Mirrorless Digital camera body. Exposure determined by Zebras with ISO on the rear dial. ISO 400: 1/400 sec. at f/11 in Manual mode. AWB at 9:40am on a snowy day.
Flexible Spot (S) was active at the moment of exposure. The AF point was right on the bird.

I returned to Bosque in late November of 2019 and found conditions much improved. And best of all, the IPT was blessed when six inches of wet snow fell. While long focal lengths are needed to photograph single geese or cranes in flight, the shorter focal lengths are often best for blurs and bird-scapes. For today’s featured image I went with the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens. In addition I often used the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4G OSS lens and the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS.
I am hoping to do a Bosque IPT again this year a bit earlier than the last one in hopes of finding lots of birds close to the road while praying for winds in the morning with a southerly component … With the uncertainty of the pandemic, folks may cancel at any time for any reason and still receive a full refund.

Black and White Wet Rocks
I created this B&W version using the Wet Rocks pre-set by going Filter > Nik Collection > Silver Efex Pro II. SEP II gives you lots of pre-sets — 38 in the version that I am using. After checking most of them I usually wind up going with Wet Rocks. Other favorites include High Contrast (harsh or smooth), High Structure (smooth), Push Process (N + 1.5), Full Dynamic (smooth), and Fine Art Process.

All are invited to leave a comment letting us know whether they prefer Image #1, the color version, or Image #2, the B&W version. As always, please let us know why you made your choice. I have a clear favorite and will share my thoughts with you here soon.

The Lens: Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for SONY E
The lens itself is great. It is obviously well-constructed, it is very sharp, and at f/2.8 it is fast. It is relatively inexpensive. Best of all it is a 2X macro lens! It focuses down to an incredible 9.7″ from the plane of the sensor and can yield subjects at twice life-size!
Because there are no electrical contacts on the lens, no information of any kind is transmitted to the camera: not the aperture or even the name of the lens …
There is however a huge design problem: there is no groove on the lens in which to seat the Venus Optics Laowa Tripod Collar for 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO. The only spot to place the tripod collar is on the narrow strip of the lens barrel between the focus ring and the aperture ring. The fit is poor at best, and when the collar is loosened to rotate the lens, it slips and twists out of place and covers part of either ring. The collar often becomes skewed. And it is almost always difficult at best to fully tighten it.
There is plenty of room for a groove in which to seat the tripod collar on the proximal (near) end of the lens barrel. Had they sensibly placed it there, the rig would have been fully functional and much better balanced. It often baffles the mind to think that someone actually got paid to design the lens and the tripod collar.
Now at this point you are likely thinking that it is time to return the lens. But despite the challenge of using it on a tripod and the lack of EXIF data, I actually love the lens. That said after using it for only a single morning … A 100mm 2X macro lens is not something to be taken lightly.
Do you prefer the tighter framing and image design (along with the friendly spider) of Image #1 or the wider version (sans arachnid), Image #2? Why?
This image was created by BPN Landscape Moderator, my friend, Andrew McLachlan. He used the handheld Nikon D800 and the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon F with a Raynox DCR-250 diopter screwed onto the front of the lens to achieve 4X magnification — four times life-size. ISO 400. Flash as main light: 1/80 sec. at f/22. Meike dual flash macro system on Wimberley F-2 Macro Bracket.
By adding a diopter, Andrew got to four times life-size. In addition, adding flash and working handheld adds a ton of versatility to these amazing lenses. You can see more of Andrew’s excellent photography in his nature galleries here. He created both Focus on Frogs and Ontario Landscapes – A Photographers Guide.. Landscape folks might wish to check out Andrew’s forum here.
A Version for Most Systems
Laowa makes a 100mm macro lens for all major camera systems (as above).
Note: For those like me working on a tripod, the Wimberley P-20 plate mounted in reverse is best for these lenses.

After a slow (2 keeper) morning on Wednesday past, I went out early today — Thursday 9 JULY 2020 in search of flowers. I purchased a new toy from Patrick Sparkman, the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony E. I had a ton of fun and made some wonderful images. There are lots of great positives along with a few negatives including one major one. Details soon.

At First Glance …
At first glance, after noting the clipped feet, you might think that I screwed up the framing with today’s featured image. But I did not. I could not risk moving my vehicle closer as I would have gotten stuck in the mud along the edge of the canal and I knew that I would not include any part of the dock in the final cropped image. Scroll down to see the optimized image.
Note: this bird was resting on the outer portion of the same dock as the Great Egret featured in the Behaviors on the Dock of the Bay blog post here.
The SONY e-guide talks extensively about the choosing between Upper Center ZONE AF-C and Tracking Flexible Spot (M or S) AF-C when photographing birds in vertical format …

Eliminating the Dock!
The flattened. original, 8-bit TIFF file was 172.3 MB. After a proportional crop from all four sides, the flattened, cropped, 8-bit TIFF file wound up at 96.8 MB. So the optimized file is about 56% of the original file with slightly more than 44% of the original pixels cropped away. Even when created at 1200mm, sharp files from the a7r iv allow for relatively large crops that provide oodles of fine feather detail along with still-superb image quality.

Bird photography here at ILE has been slow the past few mornings. On Tuesday, I tried and failed on some Wild Turkey hens with three poults. This morning — Wednesday 8 JULY 2020 — I created a few frames of the Mother’s Day crane family and headed home early.
It has poured here for the past three afternoons with thunder and lightning keeping me out of the pool until about 7pm; my late swims have been a delight.
With two folks signed up, I decided that with discretion being the better part of valor to cancel the Fort DeSoto Fall 2020 IPT due to my concerns about COVID 19.

The 500mm f/4 lenses have been the world’s most popular telephoto lenses for birds, nature, wildlife, and sports for many decades. I owned and used and loved my “old five” for many years. If you use Canon and don’t have the cash for a 500 II and can handle the additional 1 1/2 pounds, then this is your best super-telephoto option. Most everyone can produce sharp images with this lens and a 1.4X TC. Folks with good to excellent sharpness techniques can do the same with a 2X TC. A new 500 II sells right now for $8,999.00 so you can save an amazing $6,650.00 by grabbing Art’s original version 500mm f/4 IS lens right now. artie

This image was created on the morning of 6 JULY 2020 at Indian Lake Estates. I used the handheld Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens (at 600mm) and the 61MP monster, the Sony Alpha a7R IV Mirrorless Digital camera body ISO 400. Exposure determined by Zebras with ISO on the rear wheel: 1/800 sec. at f/7.1 in Manual mode; the exposure was confirmed as perfect by RawDigger. AWB at 7:53am on a sunny morning.
Tracking Flexible Spot M AF-C was active at the moment of exposure and performed superbly.

For this one, the “studio” setting was provided by the concrete driveway where the bird stood. I got out of my vehicle to get higher and avoid the house in the background … Learning to recognize such situations can provide great rewards.
Focus Breathing
I have heard the term focus breathing for many years and possibly for several decades. I thought that it applied only to zoom lenses that zoomed internally, that is, lenses did not extend when you zoomed to a longer focal length). Arash Hazeghi mentioned that the SONY 200-600 does not give you 600mm when you are working close (as with today’s featured image). My first response was that I had never really noticed nor did I consider it a problem. But I owed it to myself to learn more about focus breathing. I found an article on the PhotographyLife website by Nasim Mansurov and read it carefully. I learned that I was wrong in my understanding of focus breathing (but only 100% wrong!). Interested folks can learn a lot from Nassim’s Understanding Focus Breathing article here. I urge all who use a telephoto zoom lens and those who do focus stacking when shooting macro, landscape or architecture photography to study this article.
Here is a direct quote from the beginning of the piece:
Focus breathing is a term that describes the change in focal length that occurs as a result of adjusting the focusing distance of a lens. It is a common issue that occurs on many photographic lenses. As focus is adjusted from close focus to infinity, focus breathing causes noticeable changes in both angle of view and magnification.
These changes are often clearly visible to the photographer during the process of focusing, with different lenses exhibiting varying levels of focal length changes. Focus breathing issues can occur on both prime and zoom lenses. (Italics mine.)
Focus Breathing and the SONY 200-600 G Lens
Tuesday evening I grabbed my 200-600, zoomed to 600mm, turned AF off, walked as far from my house as I could, and focused manually on one window. As I turned the focus ring to closer focus, the window obviously got smaller in the frame. As regular readers know, I am not a big fan of testing, but I am 100% positive that at minimum focusing distance the SONY 200-600 GM zoomed out to 600mm will actually give you something like 550mm of reach (or possibly a bit less).
Focus Breathing and MFD Info for the SONY 200-600 G Lens (and others)
Nasim concludes with this:
Is focus breathing a big problem that every photographer needs to be aware of? Not really. Most photographers aren’t even going to notice any differences in angle of view and magnification when using most lenses at close distances.
For me, that about sums it up. I never noticed the focus breathing/shorter focal length issue with the 200-600 until Arash Hazeghi pointed it out.
Folks need to understand that the MFD of the 200-600 is a very superb 7.87 feet. That compares quite favorably with the MFD of the SONY 600mm f/4 GM at 14.8 feet, and the Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF lens at 9.84 feet.
The magnifications work out to .2X for the 200-600, .18X for the 500 PF, and a still respectable .14X for the weapon of mass destruction, the SONY 600mm f/4 GM.
Therefore, even with the focus breathing issues significantly reducing the focal length of the SONY 200-600 for close work, it is still the clear winner when it comes to working tight (again, as with today’s super-sharp featured image …)
Just for the record book, the MFD for the SONY (and the Canon) 100-400 lenses is an amazing 3.22 feet that results in magnification as great as 0.35X (depending on the focal length).
The a7R iv and the SONY 200-600 G Lens
In the SONY e-Guide (by Patrick Sparkman and Arthur Morris), we state clearly that for flight photography the a7r iv/200-600 g combo is less than ideal. The a7r iv with the 200-600 is, however, perfect for close work and for general bird and nature photography; with good technique and a decent shutter speed the huge a7r iv files are incredibly sharp. And the a7r iv does well with flight photography on the 600mm f/4 GM both alone and with either TC. AF, however, is not as good as it is with the a9 ii.
Both Patrick and I have trouble distinguishing sharp 200-600 G images from sharp 600mm f/4 GM images despite the fact that the GM lenses are supposed to be of much better quality than the SONY G lenses. Or not!
Arash recently replaced his Nikon 600mm f/4 VR lens/D5 or D850 combination with the SONY 600mm f/4/a9 ii and is now routinely posting super-sharp flight images made at 1200mm in the Avian Forum on BPN …
Strangely, Arash trashed the SONY 200-600 over the course of several e-mails last week. He finally realized that it was possible that he had received a damaged lens. I am happy to report that he had the lens replaced and is now making some very sharp images with his new 200-600 and the a9 ii.

I headed out early this morning — Monday 6 JULY 2020. It was clear and sunny. I stopped on the way down to the lake to photograph some large yellow flowers; I am going to try to learn whether they are a native species — there is one, Wild Allamanda, but after some online research I suspect that it is one of the non-natives …
I did OK down by the lake with several adult Sandhill Cranes including one in a very nice studio setting 🙂

A Macro Lens Question
Left as a comment by Norm Skliar:
Art, question, – is the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 HSM macro lens compatible with the Canon EOSS 7D Mark II? If not, what macro lens would you recommend ?
Most of the 90, 100, and 105mm macro lenses do not come with a tripod collar so if you are planning to work on a tripod as I do most of the time, you will need to explore the tripod collar options.
We are however, not quite done 🙂 When I used Canon, I owned the 100 IS macro and the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens. For flowers, especially cultivated flowers like dahlias and tulips, the 100 macro was great. But for generally smaller wildflowers, frogs, bugs, and butterflies, I loved the longer focal length of the 180 macro. That brings us to the last alternative, the Tamron Telephoto SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Di LD IF Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS. Here again, the off-brand Tamron 180 has a great reputation. Do understand that the Sigma and Tamron lenses will save you considerable money while producing excellent results …
All in all, it is your call. Do let me know if you have any additional questions and please remember to use my affiliate links for this and other purchases.

Photo Mechanic Screen Capture for Partridge Pea (Camaecrista fasciculata)
Your browser does not support iFrame.
Partridge Pea: a Difficult Subject!
Though a common species, I found my first batch of Partridge Pea just a few days ago, and a second batch yesterday at a different location. As the flower is quite distinctive and there are no similar species, I am 100% sure of my identification. (Unless and until proven otherwise!)
The flowers are sort of curled and twisted making them difficult to photograph; with this and all of the other blossoms, one of the five petals was curved in as you with the petal at the 10:30 position (just to the right and above the letter A). This means that you need some extra depth-of-field. As stopping down with the rig I was using is problematic, the simple solution was to move the tripod back a bit and photograph the blossom with some extra leaves and a pod or two rather than trying to shoot the single flower full frame. Remember, at a given aperture, the greater the distance to the subject the greater the depth-of-field.
If you enlarge the image you can see the second big problem: the sepal (?) on our left just below the letter A is flattened against the petal below the A. Compositionally, this left an empty hole in the area around the A. After cleaning up the dark crud spots on some of the compound leaves, I created and saved a version true to the RAW file. But I was not at all happy with the image design as noted above. A day after working the image, I re-did it with a new plan. I painted a Quick Mask of the sepal (?) at the 4:30 position (just our left of the B) and placed it on its own layer. I moved it into position with the Move Tool (V) and then, using the Transform command I rotated it, flipped it vertically, and re-sized and warped it a bit so that it did not match the source sepal perfectly.
On Shading Flowers on Sunny Days …
I’ve consistently said after looking at way too many terrible flower images lit by harsh light in full sun (mostly in field guides), that the best and simplest way for folks to improve their flower photography would be to shade their subjects. That can be done in many ways — with a large diffuser, with the photographer’s body, with a large piece of cardboard or a cardboard box, with a blanket thrown over a spare tripod, or as here, with my vehicle.

The Optimized Version
Considering the difficulty of the subject and the image optimization, I was quite happy with the results. Now I need to find a perfect blossom with the leaf just above A oriented just like the leaf above B and I will be in business … Your thoughts?

On Saturday morning I found a nearby home with extensive flowering plantings. I have close to zero interest in photographing non-native flowers, but there was a gorgeous tropical heliconia species and I could not resist doing some abstracts. There were some neat wildflowers across the road near a drainage ditch but by the time I spotted them it had gotten breezy. I returned this early morning — Sunday 5 JULY 2020 — and spent a solid hour with the Sigma 150mm/Vello adapter/a7r IV combo.
I headed down to the lake by 7:30am and found and photographed the Mother’s Day crane family. I saw the surviving chick, hatched on 9 or 10 May, fly about 15 yards. More good news: Old Gnarly’s surviving colt is alive and well. The family must have crossed the canal a few weeks ago to Avocado where they have been happily dining in a corn-feeder-equipped backyard. Thanks to my new neighbor/friend Ron who alerted me to the family’s location.

This image was created on Wednesday 1 July 2020 at Indian Lake Estates, FL. Working down the slope near the canal, I handheld the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens (at 181mm) with the blazingly fast AF King, the Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital camera body. ISO 800. Exposure determined by Zebras with ISO on the rear wheel: 1/500 sec. at f/6.3 in Manual mode. AWB at 7:09am on a morning with aa few clouds in the eastern sky.
Wide AF-C was active at the moment of exposure; the system picked an AF point halfway down the colt’s long neck right on the same plane as the eye.
The image above is a Capture One Screen Capture. After enlarging the image, please leave a comment letting us know whether you would keep this one or delete it. And let us know why you made your decision. If it is a keeper for you, consider letting us know your plans for the image optimization.
Several folks responded stating that they would keep the image and shared reasonable plans for the image optimization.

An Insta-Delete for Me
For me, this one is an insta-delete as the colt’s head is turned about two degrees away. BTW, that does not mean the my answer is right for everyone. As someone mentioned, I have a nice collection of about one zillion Sandhill Crane image.

Mis-understanding Perspective Changes and Sun Angle
In the Behaviors on the Dock of the Bay. Working a Subject. Eye Replacement. And An H-V AF Tip for All Systems blog post here, I wrote:
I stopped my SUV about a foot or two short of being on sun angle. Note that the shadows of the bird’s legs (and the pole) are angled about 10-15 degrees to the left. Before you scroll down to see today’s four featured images, try to figure out why I did not get right on sun angle and leave a comment.
It seemed like such a simple question, but many folks struggled. Below are some relevant conversations from the Comments section.
With Gary Prestash:
I think that there are 3 reasons why you stopped short of sun angle. (1) the post on the opposite side of the dock would constrain your shooting view of the bird;
(1) is incorrect. As I said elsewhere here, if I pulled forward to get right on sun angle there would have been nothing between the bird and me. And since I was working at 1200mm I would not have been constrained in any way!
(2) that same post would cast a shadow that might cover part of the bird;
(2) is incorrect. As I said elsewhere here (and above!), if I pulled forward to get right on sun angle there would have been nothing between the bird and me.
and (3) you wanted the blue water behind the bird as your b/g, not the darker shadowed water.
(3) is 100% correct and is the answer that I was looking for.

With David Policansky
Artie: Thanks for these, and happy Fourth of July.
Thanks and ditto, David. But it’s Groundhog Day here; every day is pretty much the same.
The temperature might have reached 70 here on Nantucket today.
It was 104F in some places in Ontario in the past few days! I’d rather be on Nantucket!
I have two favorites, the scratching egret and the one with the open mouth.
Thanks for sharing those.
The scratching one would be my favorite alone except for the eye; I think, most animals, including birds, close their eye when scratching their face like that, so the wide-open eye looks just slightly odd. I might not have noticed if you’d not mentioned it.
David, David, David. Yes, many animals and birds protect their eyes when scratching. But if you go back and read carefully you will see that I replaced the eye in Image #4 … So at times, they keep their eyes wide open, unprotected by the nictitating membrane. That is one of the reasons that I have no qualms about replacing nictitating-covered-eyes. If you think that I am pulling your foot, I’d be glad to send you the RAW file 🙂
As for why you were off sun angle, first, let me say to Gary Prestash that moving your point of view cannot affect the shadow of a post, so if the post isn’t casting a shadow on the bird from the viewpoint where you took the photo, moving wouldn’t make it cast a shadow on the bird.
First off, changing one’s point of view does affect the shadow cast by the post. If I moved my vehicle forward so that the sun was right behind me and pointed at the post, the shadow of the post would disappear behind the post. If I moved my SUV backwards, the angle between the post and its shadow would increase. As for the second part of your statement, I was confused at first but I believe that if I moved the car back far enough, the shadow of the right hand post would have fallen on the bird (even if our view of the bird would have been blocked by the left-hand post. Whew! That taxed my brain cells 🙂
But it would wreck the composition, I think, by putting the post on the right too close to the bird.
I am confused again 🙂 Please understand that when framing Image #1 I was thinking of it only as an educational image: I was not at all concerned with any compositional or artistic aspects of the photograph.
with love, artie
With J Marr Miller (who almost hit the nail on the head):
Artie, You chose to be slightly off sun angle because you wanted to avoid the tree reflections in your water backgrounds.
My Reply:
Yes sir! More simply put, I wanted the blue water background. Notice that in Images #s 2 & 5 that a some dark reflections crept into the sides of the frame.
Starting from Scratch for Better Understanding
Scroll up and take a good look at Image #3. Put yourself in the driver’s seat. Note that if you pull the car up a foot or two that instead of a blue water background — my heart’s desire for this series of images — you would have had a darker background consisting of the reflections of a tree on the far shore (as stated above by J Marr Miller).
Now try the same exercise while noting what happens to the shadow of the post as you pull forward or move the car back …
Questions are of course quite welcome.

On Friday morning, I worked on preening adult Sandhill Cranes in early morning light but did not come up with anything memorable.
It’s amazing how well relatively small price drops can work when selling used gear. I was glad to learn yesterday of the sale of Anita North’s 80-400 VR, the two high-shutter-count D850s, and her two teleconverters — the TC-E17 and the TC-E20. It is a buyer’s market and there are lots of great buys on the Used Gear Page here.
The forecast for today –Saturday 4 JUNE 2020 — is for partly to mostly cloudy with a blessedly and relatively low high temperature of 90 degrees. With scattered thunderstorms of course. I will be concentrating on flowers this morning.
You will need to scroll down below Image #1 to see the four featured images. If you are not too busy barbecuing, please leave a comment and let us know which is your favorite image and why.

Young-of-the-Year Great Egret
You can tell that this is an immature bird that hatched a few months ago by the dark mark along the distal end of the upper mandible. Analyzing the situation reveals that this is not the world’s most beautiful young Great Egret; note the sort of dirty brown smudges on various parts of the plumage, especially on the chin and the surrounding area. But …
Wide AF-C. The system grabbed the upper center of the upper mandible, right on the same plane as the bird’s eye.
Image #3: Great Egret immature preening a neck feather

But!
The bird, however, was doing all sorts of neat stuff so I stayed with it for a good half hour. The trick with tall preening-the-neck images like this is to have the bird’s face and bill perfectly parallel to the back of the camera (and the sensor). And the icing on the cake for all preening images is getting a frame or two showing the bird with a feather or two in its bill. The SONY a9 ii’s amazing 15 frames per second makes that a lot easier to do than when working with slower frame-rate bodies.
Wide AF-C. The system grabbed a spot just in front of the base of the lower mandible.
Image #4: Great Egret ???

???
I am not sure if this image shows the bird yawning or jerking its head around while trying to eject a pellet or bolus. Herons, egret, gulls, shorebirds, and raptors will often be seen coughing such balls of indigestible materials made up of small bones, teeth, shells, feathers, fur, etc. I did not see this bird regurgitate anything.
Eye Replacement
In this frame — my favorite from a sequence of about 15 images, the nictitating membrane covered the bird’s eye. I grabbed a fully open eye from another frame via a small Quick Mask. Then I placed the new eye layer on this image by reducing the opacity to 50%, rotated, resized, and warped the layer, and refined it to perfection all as detailed in The BIRDS AS ART Current Workflow e-Guide (Digital Basics II) and in APTATS I & II — can save $15 by purchasing the pair!
Center Zone AF-C. Here, the system grabbed a spot an inch in front of the base of the upper mandible.

Horizontal/Vertical (H-V) AF Area Modes
Noting how quickly the behaviors changed — Images #3, 4, & 5 were created in a span of just 78 seconds — folks might wonder how I was able to change the AF Areas as needed to best keep up with the action. First off, as with Canon and Nikon, you can set your SONY camera to remember one AF Area for horizontal shooting and one other for vertical shooting! Actually, with SONY, the camera can remember two AF Areas for vertical shooting depending on whether you rotate the lens in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Your camera may or may not offer this feature.
To change the AF Area quickly, Patrick and I use the default button: C2. One of the great strengths of the SONY e-Guide and Videos is the lengthy discussion of the numerous and varied SONY AF Areas and dozens of examples in the various galleries.

Photography at ILE becomes more difficult each day as the heat of summer intensifies. Few flowers are blooming and there are not many birds around. On a more positive note, The Perch has been becoming more active lately.
The forecast for today — Thursday 2 July (can you believe that it is July?), is for sunny to partly cloudy with a high of only 92 degrees along with afternoon thunderstorms. The pool is up to 91 degrees … I will be heading down to the lake before 7am to see what I can find.

Image #2: Spatterdock bud/BLUER version — I liked this one best
Your browser does not support iFrame.
BLACKER OR BLUER?
In the Aquatic Jewels! Which version do you prefer? And More on RawDigger and Exposing to the Right blog post here, I asked if folks preferred the blacker version or the bluer version.
The first folks who commented liked the blacker version. Then Gary Axten wrote this:
I’m going to buck the trend; I prefer the blue version. The blue bleeding into the oof highlight on the blue version looks more natural than the blue into black. Plus I prefer the water colour.
Have you considered focus stacking for images like this?
And then, Adam agreed:
I share Gary’s observations and find the blue version a bit more natural and realistic. The background glow provides balance against the iridescent blue on the edges.
I agree; the bluer version is my favorite by far for the reasons above.
Focus Stacking?
In his comment, Gary Axten asked:
Have you considered focus stacking for images like this?
I have thought about focus stacking for some of my flower photography, but rejected the idea for several reasons:
1- SONY does not offer automatic focus stacking.
2- Doing it manually is too much work for me.
3- With the Sigma 150/Vello adapter combo I am bracketing the exposures like a maniac because Zebras only work (to some degree, at least), when I am wide open. That would mean creating far too many images.
With the (floating) spatterdock image made at a shutter speed of 1/6 second, it is likely that the flower would move at least a bit during the creation of five or ten or 15 images …

I bought the e-guide and videos for my A9 and A7r4 cameras and whilst I initially thought the price was a little steep at $125, I soon realized the amount of work that went into testing the vast array of menu settings that you promote. I made a couple of tweaks to the custom key layout but the instruction on the use of zebras (with both ISO and Exposure Comp) is worth the price of admission alone.
Perhaps we could meet up for a beer in Seahouses next time you’re over for a UK Puffins and Gannets IPT so I could thank you in person for the effort you and Patrick have put into this great guide and the videos. Chris

Selling your used (or like-new) photo gear through the BAA Blog is a great idea. We charge only a 5% commission. One of the more popular used gear for sale sites charged a minimum of 20%. Plus assorted fees! Yikes. They went out of business. And e-Bay fees are now up to 13%. Please understand that e-Bay prices are bogus. And the same is true of the prices of used gear including my dear friends at B&H and the other mega-outfits. They offer you pennies and then try to sell the stuff to ignorant folks for ridiculously high prices. With their huge international exposure, they occasionally find someone …
The minimum item price here is $500 (or less for a $25 fee). If you are interested please shoot us an e-mail with the words Items for Sale Info Request cut and pasted into the Subject line :). Stuff that is priced fairly — I offer pricing advice to those who agree to the terms — usually sells. With the pandemic and the down economy, the market had been somewhat depressed, but sales have been brisk for the past few weeks. And over the past year, we have sold many many hundreds of items. Do know that prices the used prices of many items have been dropping steadily. The prices garnered for used Canon gear has tanked completely as demand has dropped tremendously. It is ironic that for decades Canon gear had very strong resale value … That said, the prices on used Nikon gear are dropping as well. You can see all the current bargains here on the Used Gear Page.
Note: all BAA Used Gear sales include insured ground shipping via UPS to lower 48 US addresses only. Others who live elsewhere are invited to e-mail the seller for shipping surcharge info. Sellers should charge you only the difference between shipping to the farthest US location from their home and the charge to a non-lower-48 address.

Anita North’s D-850s
Anita North is a skilled photographer. Over the years, you have seen some of her great images here on the blog. When it comes to pressing the shutter button, she is the most aggressive photographer I have ever run into. Her basic rule is If it’s in the viewfinder, press the shutter button and hold it down! As you might expect, she often gets far behind with picking her keepers.
Anita shoots a ton of frames but her style works well for her. On occasion, she comes up with something magical that most folks — including and especially me — would miss. If you are considering purchasing either of the well-used camera bodies below, do know that the D850 shutters are rated to “200,000 cycles.” As both of Anita’s D850s exceed that (one by miles), that statement is obviously just an estimate. Though I do not shoot nearly as much as Anita, I have never — in my 36 years of photographing birds — had a shutter fail. Neither has Anita. I would not bet against the shutters on either of the camera bodies below might very well outlast the photographer who purchases one of them …

The Mother’s Day Crane Colt Family
The colt in today’s featured image was hatched on either 9 or 10 MAY of this year. That makes the colt — now almost as tall is its parents, about 7 1/2 weeks old. How fast they grow! Its nest-mate perished about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Monday morning was another calm morning that featured a white disk in a hazy grey sky until about 9:00am. With perfect conditions for flower photography, I drove the side-streets for an hour without getting me gear out once as it was a bit breezy. I headed down to the lake and decided to try to shoot some fleabane blossoms. Just as I was about to set up, my friend Ron came by on his golf cart. He described a brown and grey bird with a yellow breast that was catching dragonflies to feed its chicks in the nest in his backyard right near the pool. It sounded perfect for Great-crested Flycatcher. I followed him to his home and found two Great-crested Flycatchers feeding young every few minutes.
The big problem for photography is that the nest was built deep in the end of a pile of 25-foot long lengths of aluminum siding atop a trailer. I found two perches that Ron kindly duct-taped in place in the spots where the birds landed consistently. But the birds ignored the perches all day long choosing to land on the siding right next to the perch …
At 9:00am I drove back down to the lake and spent 30 minutes with the fleabane flowers. With the sun then brighter, I shaded the flowers with my body and created a few nice images.
The forecast for today — Tuesday 30 JUNE 2020 — is for another hazy, hot, and humid day. I will be heading down to the lake before seven am.

Afternoons at ILE
On clear afternoons, bird photography at ILE can be challenging. If you are working on sun angle, there will often be homes in the background. I found the Great Egret in today’s featured image (two versions) looking for prey in the canal that runs east/west at the south end of the South Peninsula. As this species is quite shy at ILE, I needed to approach slowly while moving my vehicle into position. I was able to get almost but not quite on sun angle with a lovely dark-water background. With the wind from the south I needed to wait until the bird looked to its right so that my image would feature a decent head angle. It did and I pushed the shutter button.

Image #3: Pinning the Curve to darken the background
Making Curves Adjustments
Below is a free excerpt adapted from The BIRDS AS ART Current Workflow e-Guide (Digital Basics II). Two decades ago when I was learning Photoshop, I struggled greatly learning to use Regular Layer Masks and making Curves adjustments. Long-time friend and then oft-co-leader Ellen Anon came to the rescue …
When you have an image that is flat, i.e., lacking contrast, you can try this. Create a new layer (Command J) and go Image > Auto Contrast. In most cases you will want to reduce the opacity to from 10% to 50% but at times 100% might look good.
When I need to lighten or darken an image, try this simple technique: hit Command J to put the image on a new layer and then go Image > Adjustments > Curves (or hit Command M.) Then pull the curve up from the center to lighten the image or pull the curve down from the center to darken it. To change the contrast in an image, first click dead center to place a point on the diagonal line. Then place a second point on the diagonal line three-quarters of the way up. Pull that point down to reduce the contrast (make the highlights darker and the dark tones lighter) or pull that point down to increase contrast (make the highlights brighter and the dark tones darker). For finer control, you can use the up arrow key to reduce the contrast or the down arrow key to increase it.
Curves adjustments are typically used to adjust a specific tonality in an image while leaving the others unchanged. Let’s say that you are happy with the light tones and the middle tones in an image but want to darken only the dark tones (as in today’s featured image). First you need to place three or four locking points exactly on the straight line where you want to leave the tonalities unchanged; this is called pinning the Curve. Tip: you can tell that the locking points are exactly on the straight line by checking the values in the Output and Input boxes on near the lower left corner of the dialogues box. If the point is on the line these values will be the same. If you are off by a bit, you can get them to match simply by hitting the up or down arrow keys.
Tonality Tip: Here is a tip that can help you understand exactly what you are doing by showing you where the various tonalities in an image are located. Note that when you open a Curves dialogue box that the Eyedropper Tool will be active. Click anywhere on the image to learn its tonality. As long as you hold the cursor down, a dot will appear on the diagonal line. The dark tones will show on the lower left part of the diagonal line, the light tones on the upper right. The middle tones will of course be somewhere near the middle.
You can set one or more locking points on the diagonal lines at a specific tonality by Command-clicking on that tonality. This can be a big help when you need to work precisely.
In the diagram above, understand that when you work on the dark tones that the three locking points will lock the light and middle tones down; when you pull the curve down to darken the dark tones, the rest of the line will not move and the tonalities there will not change. Again, this is called pinning the curve.

Saturday moring was still and sunny with a heavy haze to the east the created dead-solid perfect conditions for flower photography. I found and photographed a nice pink (species ?) and an amazing tree totally covered with large yellow blossoms. I need to edit (pick my keepers) from Friday and Saturday today so that I do not fall any further behind.
The forecast for today — Sunay 28 June 2020 — is still and sunny turning partly cloudy with an afternoon high of 95 degrees. Par for the course. With the hot weather, the pool is up to a much too-warm 89 degrees; the nights are too warm and the pool too large for my heater/chiller to keep up. I took a day off from all exercise lasst Thursday as I passed a thankfully small kidney stone. Anyone interested in the alternative medicine tricks that saved me from posssibly major pain and grief is invited to shoot me an e-mail with the words Kidney Stone Alternative Remedy as the subject line.

With the pandemic and the down economy, the market had been somewhat depressed but sales have been brisk for the past few weeks. You can see all the currrent bargains here on the Used Gear Page.

Washed Out RAW Files are the Best Exposure
I have always exposed to the right to ensure reduce noise and create large image files. But is was not until recently when Patrick Sparkman introduced me to RawDigger and taught me the fine-points of that app that I have been able to perfect exposing to the right. We hope to have our RawDigger Guide be published in about two to three weeks. Looking at the RED channel in the Photo Mehcanic histogram it seems that the image is mega-over-exposed but in fact RawDigger showed it to be the perfect exposure from a well-bracketed series.
I have long stated that in most instances your images should look washed out on the back of the camera. That was very much the case with today’s featured image. The trick is in the optimizing with most of the heavy lifting done during the RAW conversion (in Capture One for me). See the two versions of the same RAW file below.
Singh-Ray Filters
Singh-Ray filters have been used by the world’s top photographers for many decades. Who? Art Wolfe, Tony Sweet, John Barclay, my friend Ian Plant, my great friend Denise Ippolito, Nevada Weir, Brenda Tharp, Cole Thompson, Chuck Kimmerle, and the late Galen Rowell among others. Singh-Ray has been and is the name in quality filters. For this image I used the Singh-Ray a 77mm warming circualr polarizer set to dark to eliminate the reflectionos on the surface of the water.
No other filter manufacturer comes close to matching the quality of Singh-Ray’s optical glass that is comparable to that used by NASA. And they continue to pioneer the most innovative products on the market like their ColorCombo polarizer, Vari-ND variable and Mor-Slo 15-stop neutral density filters. When you use their filters, you’ll create better, more dramatic images and, unlike other filters, with absolutely no sacrifice in image quality. All Singh-Ray filters are handcrafted in the USA.

Optimizing Properly Exposed Images
Whatever program you are using to convert a properly expposed washed-out looking image file, you will wish to experiment with the following in no particular order:
1: Set the White Point
2: Pull down the Exposure slider.
3- Move the Highlight slider to the left.
4- Adjust the Brightness — this will always be the last step.
Once you have the TIF file in Photoshop a Curves adjustment can be made to darken the dark tones after pinning the highlights with three dots.
As you can see in Images #2 and 3, the results can be spectacular.

The SONY 100-400 GM Lens
The SONY 100-400 GM lens with its .98 meter Minumum Focusing Distance (MFD) can — with or without the 1.4X teleconverter — be great for medium-sized and lager flowers. I’ve been using it almost every day recently. And you can do the same with your Canon 100-400 II as it offers the same great MFD.

It was clear at ILE at 6:00am on Friday morning past. My plan was to head down to the lake to try to find some birds to photograph, but 45 minutes later there was some haze in the eastern sky and it was super-still; there was no wind at all. So I made the obvious choice and went to look for some flowers. One of the things that I love about wildflower photography is that the subjects change from week to week, sometimes almost from day to day. I stopped for 30 minutes to photograph a small flowering tree right on the corner of Park and Lantana, got back in my SUV, and barely made it an additional 50 yards to the first drainage ditch and found more neat stuff to photograph. At 8am I headed down to the lake to enjoy the beautifully muted light. I foound and photographed two Ospreys on The Perch; that was a first. Next I had some good chances on a young Great Egret chowing down on the latest mayfly hatch, and, on the way home, stopped for a few Black Vultures picking at a long-dead Osprey-dropped fish. All in all, it was a great morning.
The forecast for today — 27 JUNE 2020 (it is almost July; can you believe it?), is for more of the same, still and partly cloudy. I will be headed out at about 6:45am to do some photography.

Image #1: RawDigger partial screen capture for Black-bellied Whistling Duck head and neck portrait
On RawDigger
Since I have begun using and trusting RawDigger, my exposures have gotten better, always mega-pushed to the right to ensure low noise files with maximum data in the raw file. Note in the screen capture above that there are exactly 7 over-exposed GREEN pixels out of 61,000,000. Not bad. You never want more than a smattering of overexposed pixels. The underexposed pixels on the duck’s belly — shaded BLACK — are indicated by the blue underexposure warning. As with film, you simply need to expose for the WHITEs (and let the dark tones fall where they may).
Since I was not enamored with the video that I created, I have decided to do a single RawDigger e-Guide. It will be several weeks in production as need to finish my 2019 taxes. The guide will be intended only for serious photographers who really want to up their games. What I learned recently from Patrick Sparman is that it is possible to have zero over-exposed pixels and zero under-exposed pixels and still have an image that is underexposed by as much as two stops … For me, RawDigger has been a life-changer.
Image #2: Black-bellied Whistling Duck head and neck portrait plumage

The Relatively Large Crop
Compare the (cropped) optimized image (Image #2) with the original file seen in Image #1, the screen capture that opened this blog post. In fact, 66% of the original pixels were cropped away. Sharp a7r iv images (even those created at 1200mm) can stand up to relatively huge crops.
Black-bellied Whistling Duck has been becoming increasingly common in small numbers here at ILE over the past few years. As they are quite shy, however, the are difficult photographic subjects. I was very happy with this image despite the fact that I was slightly off sun angle.
Down-the-Lens Barrel AF Tip
With birds looking right at you with both eyes visible, it is imperative that you focus accurately on one eye or the other. The larger in the frame the ssubject, the more this is true. Whether you are using Canon, Nikon, SONY or any other system, the best way to focus on a single eye is to use a single small AF point and get it right on the eye you want. For today’s featured image, I went for sharp focus on the subject’s left eye (the one on our right) because it was lit by the sun.
At all costs you must not select an array. Why? There is a great chance that the AF system will grab the tip of the bill leaving both eyes well behind the plane of sharp focus. In theese situations, Canon users shoould avoid using Zone or either of the Expand AF patterns, Nikon User’s need to avoid susing Group (grp) or one of the d- settings, and SONY folks need to stay away from Zone. All user’s should not choose Wide or full screen or all-points AF for the same reasons when photographing a large in the frame bird looking right down the lens barrel. Note that such poses often yeild powerful image designs.
The beauty of SONY’s trracking Flexible Spot is that you do not have to move the AF point around in the frame; the camera does that for you.

I went down to the lake for a bit this morning — Thursday 25 JUNE 2020. I created exactly one dozen images of the surviving Mother’s Day crane colt. All 12 images — made at 1200mm — were super-sharp and featured perfect exposures. Working with RawDigger has made it relatively easy to expose to the right to the max, thus reducing noise.
Those who take the time to follow the BPN links to today’s four featured image and read the threads, will learn a ton. Aside from the great photography and the overwhelmingly excellent critiques, folks can read between the lines to learn even more. There are some folks on BPN who feel that if they do not offer at least one negative or one suggestion for improvement that they are not providing a good critique. When I come across such comments, either on my images or the images of others, I will speak up and push back …
If you are not too busy, please leave a comment and let us know which of these four excellent images is your personal favorite and why you made your choice.
As you enjoy today’s post, don’t forget that good photograpers make good images!

BPN Avian Moderator Gail Bisson of Nova Scotia first posted in the forum on 5 JUNE 2011. Her stunning images along with her thoughtful 11,991 posts led to her becoming an Avian mod this spring. Gail attended a Southwest Florida IPT about a zillion years ago. You can see what I and other BPN folks had to say about her Frosty Morning Snowy Owl image in Gail’s post here.
In the bad news department, one of the two Mother’s Day colts apparently perished on Monday evening, possibly a result of the huge rainstorm. I saw the two adults with the two healthy colts on Sunday. I saw them with only one colt on Tuesday and Wednesday … All in all, it has been a very bad year for the breeding cranes at ILE.
This morning — Wednesday 24 JUNE 2020 — I photographed the two adults and the remaining colt in the sweet early morning light. After it clouded over I went scouting in the North Marsh with no intention of photographing. Then I saw some nice White Morning Glory flowers right on the ground — they are normally a climbing vine. As it was quite still and the light was soft, I got out my Sigma 150 macro rig with the Vello adapter on the 7r iv and went to work. I had photographed this flower about two weeks ago and underexposed everything that I created at the smaller apertures. I did not make that same mistake today.
I was glad to learn this morning that Homer Bald Eagle IPT veteran — my Land’s End roommate — Mukesh Patel, will be joining me on the Fort DeSoto Fall IPT. See the complete IPT schedule here. It is time to start thinking seriously about Bosque and San Diego …

Vultures on the Pier Tips V-Log
I am blessed most mornings to have lots of Turkey and Black Vultures to photograph here at Indian Lake Estates. Evenings? Not so much. The best news is that they are often very tame. If and only if you move very slowly. Whether or not you ever get to ILE to photograph you can learn a lot by watching this 7-minute 52-second educational video. Here are some of the things you can learn about getting close to free and wild birds, getting the right exposure, working at 1200mm, and framing your images perfectly with SONY Tracking Flexible Spot AF.
Questions and comments are of course welcome.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization (OSS)
When working with my SONY telephoto lenses, I keep OSS set to Mode 3 even when working on a tripod. As you will see in the video, the sharpness and fine-feather (and eyelash!) detail at 1200mm with the a7r iv are amazing. I employed the same strategy with my Canon 600 II. And with my Nikon 600 VR, I similarly set VR to the Sport Setting and left it there all the time. Theoretically, you are supposed to turn the image stabilizer systems off when working on a tripod. In addition, you are supposed to use Mode 1 (“Normal” mode with Nikon) when handholding for static subjects and mode 2 or 3 when panning. I am buying none of that … Set it and forget it: I go with Mode 3 (“Sport mode with Nikon) all the time.

I did more birds on Monday morning: a perched Turkey Vulture and more of my favorite-ever crane family; the colts are almost six weeks old now. To raise my personal RawDigger learning curve, I used Auto Bracketing for the first time ever with digital with an avian subject. The RawDigger Flower (and static subject) e-Guide and Video is almost ready to be published. Both guides will be only for serious photographers who wish to learn to reduce noise to the max by exposing to the right to the nth degree …
It is 8:15pm on Monday evening and another huge thunderstorm continues as I type. We had a few days with just some rains but tonight’s storm is a big one; it has already been pouring for more than an hour. It knocked out Direct TV. During the days it has been in the 90s. More amazingly, there has been a massive heat-wave in Ontario, Canada with temps in the mid-30s C! In other words, hotter than Florida.
Mixed clouds and sun are forecast for this morning, Tuesday 22 JUNE 2020 so I will be heading out for about the hundredth straight morning; life is tough … With all of this rain, flowers will be the likely targets as the fields down by the lake will be too flooded to drive on.
I was glad to learn on Monday of the sale of my Nikon 70-200mm f/4 VR lens.
Arash Hazeghi SONY/Nikon News and Opinions
My friend, skilled avian flight photographer and top-notch BPN Avian Forum moderator, Arash Hazeghi, sold his two Nikon 600 VR lenses recently. And he sold his previously vaunted Nikon D5. He is now handholding the SONY 600mm f/4 GM and an a9 ii (with both TCs even for flight photography!). You can see his 1200mm skimmer flight shot here on BPN. In that thread I wrote, Most gear in Arash’s hands is great for flight photography because of his superior skills and his superior strength, hand-eye coordination, stamina, and determination.
Arash continues to own and use the Nikon 500 PF. See more on that below.
I find it funny that last January — in an e-mail to me — Arash said, (and I quote): Ha Ha! Sony is garbage.. More recently, in various BPN threads, he has acknowledged the total supremacy of SONY a9 ii autofocus.
This from his skimmer post, again from the man who clearly stated that SONY is garbage:
And I do believe the Sony 200-600 is pretty much a pile of junk next to the Nikon 500 PF… heavy, pretty bad bokeh, mediocre sharpness, significant focus breathing, slow to focus, etc., etc.
Elsewhere he continues to proclaim that the Nikon 500 PF is clearly better than the SONY 200-600. The issue there is better for whom? And better in what situations? I will be addressing those issues in detail soon both here on the blog and on BPN.
Lastly, on the subject of 200-600 sharpness, he started the thread here just for me. Be sure to read my response to his comparative sharpness testing.

SONY at 1200mm
One thing that I can agree with Arash on is that the Nikon TC-E20 III is garbage when paired with the 600mm f/4VR lens. I use the SONY 600 GM with impunity with both the a9 ii and the a7r iv with static subjects, and have no problem at all creating razor-sharp images. The Canon 2X III TC does fine with most camera bodies on static subjects with the 600 II or the 600 III; birds in flight? Not so much. It is quite clear that shooting flight at 1200mm is solely SONY.

I had a great time at Fort De Soto. Thank you for all the instruction, for your help and pointers; my photography has already improved tremendously and I’ve never made such good bird photos before. I wish I could’ve joined you on Monday and Tuesday morning as well but work got in the way. It was also nice to meet everyone on the IPT; sorry that I missed you, Ray. Thanks again for everything and I hope to join you at a future IPT sometime again.
Folks attending the IPT will be in the field early and stay out late to take advantage of the best light. The good news is that the days are relatively short in early fall. Click on the composite to enjoy a larger version.
Fort DeSoto Fall 2020 IPT
OCT 2 thru the morning session October 5, 2020 (3 1/2 DAYS). Three full and one-half day: $1399.00. Deposit: $500.00. Limit: 8 photographers/ Openings: 7.
Fort DeSoto, located just south of St. Petersburg, FL, is a mecca for migrant shorebirds in fall. There they join dozens of egrets, herons, night-herons, gulls, and terns who winter on the T-shaped peninsula that serves as their wintering grounds. With any luck, we should get to photograph one of Florida’s most desirable shorebird species: Marbled Godwit. Black-bellied Plover and Willet are easy, American Oystercatcher likely. Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, and Tricolored Heron are easy as well and we will almost surely come up with a tame Yellow-crowned Night-Heron or two. We should get to do some Brown Pelican flight photography. And Royal, Sandwich, Forster’s, and Caspian Terns will likely provide us with some good flight opportunities as well. Though not guaranteed, Roseate Spoonbill and Wood Stork would not be unexpected.
Fort DeSoto in fall is rife with tame birds. All of the images in this card were created at Fort DeSoto in either late September or early October. I hope that you can join me there this fall one way or another. Click on the composite to enjoy a larger version.
On this and all other IPTs you will learn basics and fine points of digital exposure and to get the right exposure every time after making a single test exposure, how to approach free and wild birds without disturbing them, to understand and predict bird behavior, to identify and age many species of shorebirds, to spot the good situations, to choose the best perspective, to see and understand the light, and to design pleasing images by mastering your camera’s AF system. And you will learn how and why to work in Manual mode (even if you’re scared of it).
At brunch (included) we will review m images–folks learn a ton watching me pick my keepers — why keep this one and delete that one? If you opt to bring your laptop, we can take a look at a few of your images from the morning session. We will process a few of my images in Photoshop after converting them in Capture One. That followed by Instructor Nap Time.

I did not get out of bed until 7am this morning — Sunday 21 JUNE 2020 — because I wanted to finish John Sandford’s Neon Prey but I relented once Lucas Davenport had the bad guy in custody. When I had peeked out the window at 6am it had been foggy, but when I finally got down to the lake at 7:15am it was completely sunny. I did not expect to do well, but I did. Very. I started with some images of both vulture species in the vulture tree at the south end of the South Field. Next was an Osprey on the ground in the North Field followed by a few images of the crane family. Then I found a young Great Egret standing on the dock near the boat launch. I carefully positioned my Sequoia so as not to flush the bird. It was totally comfortable with my presence in the vehicle. I spent a good 40 minutes photographing the very handsome bird preening. Everything above was at 1200mm, one of the huge advantages that SONY has over Nikon. I did remove the TC at one point to do a very tame Marsh Rabbit right outside the car.
At 8:15am I scouted around for wildflowers without finding much and wound up at home by 8:40.

Boat-tailed Grackle in the ball of the setting sun
Your browser does not support iFrame.
Racing the Sun: On Precision Vehicle Positioning …
First off, do realize that in order to try for images like this you need the sun to be well muted. Attempting to pull them off against a clear sunset (or sunrise) may result in eye damage.
In any case, the sun is quickly heading down and to your right as it dives toward the western horizon. It is easy to figure out that positioning the vehicle so that the bird is completely within the ball of the sun is a big challenge. Every time that you move your vehicle you have a very few seconds to make the shot. That if you actually stop your car in the perfect spot … Adding to the challenge is that I was working from a long slope that leads down to the shore of the lake. So when you reposition you not only have to line the bird up with the sun but you need to be at the right elevation as well. At times, things can get a bit frantic …
When it all comes together, it is quite rewarding.

The BAA Middle of Florida Photographic Site Guide

The BAA Middle of Florida Photographic Site Guide
126 pages, 87 photographs by Joe Przybyla and Arthur Morris.
The PDF for this e-Guide is an electronic download sent via e-mail.
I had thought about doing a guide to some of the great but little-known photo hotspots around central Florida for about a decade, but those plans never came to fruition. I met Joe online in the Avian Forum at BirdPhotographer’s.Net about two years ago. Joe’s photography has improved tremendously over the past few years; he credits the BAA blog, my books and PDFs, and his participation on BPN. The one thing that I learned right from the get-go about Joe is that he is a hard and tenacious worker, always striving to improve his skills and to grow his knowledge base. As he knew of more than a few good spots in central Florida, I broached the idea of us doing a photographic site guide that covered many of the little-known photographic hotspots from Brandon to Lakeland to Joe Overstreet Road to Indian Lake Estates (my Florida home for the past 20 years or so). After more than many, many dozens of hours of effort, The BIRDS AS ART Middle of Florida Photographic Site Guide is now a reality. Thanks to Joe’s wife Dottie for her review of our writing. We all learned once again that writing is a process, a back and forth process. All thanks to the white pelicans of Lakeland. Here are the locations that are detailed in this e-Guide:
Indian Lake Estates: Sandhills Cranes with chicks and colts, lots of vultures, and Ospreys up the kazoo!
Gatorland, Kissimmee: Learn to make great images of wading birds in a cluttered rookery.
The Brandon Rookery: Great for nesting Wood Storks, Great Egrets, and more.
Circle Bar B Reserve, Lakeland: Here you will find a great variety of avian subjects in a great variety of habitats.
Lake Morton, Lakeland: There are lots of silly tame birds here including and especially American White Pelican during the colder months.

Today, Saturday, 20 JUNE 2020, started off a bit foggy; perfect for flowers. I’m not sure why I drove around the block. but in an abandoned field, I spotted some skinny sunflower types and spent about an hour with that little stand. Then I headed for one of my favorite spots at the end of Lantana and spent another hour poking around. After I got home I had my usual breakfast of smoked salmon and Philly cream cheese with Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel seasoning on top. Then I began work on this blog post, took a nap, did my cardio-bursts, worked some more on this post, did a bit on the Stairmaster, swam my usual 66 lengths, had my early dinner, and finished this blog post. In other words, same old same old …

Anita North’s Shooting Style
Anita North is a skilled photographer. Over the years, you have seen some of her great images here on the blog. When it comes to pressing the shutter button, she is the most aggressive photographer I have ever run into. Her basic rule is If it’s in the viewfinder, press the shutter button and hold it down!. As you might expect, she often gets far behind with picking her keepers.
Anita shoots a ton of frames but her style works well for her. On occasion, she comes up with something magical — like the image above — that most folks — including and especially me — would miss. If you are considering purchasing either of the well-used camera bodies below, do know that the D850 shutters are rat4d to “200,000 cycles.” As both of Anita’s D850s exceed that (one by miles), that statement is obviously just an estimate. Though I do not shoot nearly as much as Anita, I have never — in my 36 years of photographing birds — had a shutter fail. Neither has Anita. I would not bet against the shutters on either of the camera bodies below might very well outlast the photographer whoo purchases one of them …
In Anita’s “defense,” both bodies look a lot better than one would expect after learning the shutter counts. That because she shoots a ton in each session but over the years, not that many shooting sessions. If that makes any sense. Best of all, each body is bargain priced to sell.

On a still, sunny Thursday morning, inspired by the two Spatterdock i-phone images below, I spent two hours photographing Spatterrdock buds and blossoms. I will be sharing some of those images with you here soon. This morning — Friday 19 JUNE 2020 — I spent most of my time with the crane family but wound up photographing a nice Spatterdock flower with the 600GM/2XTC/a7r iv combo.
This morning I spoke with Christopher Robinson, the former editor of Outdoor Photographer. We had worked together on some articles and covers as far back as the Age of Film. For the past five years, he has been running the day-to-day content operations on the Sony AlphaUniverse.com website. Chris was recently excited to learn that I had gone to SONY full-time and will be doing a feature article on me detailing how I’ve used my SONY gear for birds, wildlife, and general nature photography.

Plamped in place. Manual focus using the Focus Magnifier (page 37) and Manual Focus Toggle (page 35) tips and techniques detailed in the SONY e-Guide and Videos.
Image #1: Spatterdock bud just peaking out of the water
If you have an idea as to what is pictured in the image above, please leave a comment and be as specific as possible.
David Policansky wrote, I think that Image #1 is a sliced kiwi fruit.
Margaret commented: Image #1 is an alien’s eyeball.
Ravi Hirekatur was at least in the neighborhood when he wrote: #1 looks like a reflection of a flower pod on something.
In fact, Image #1 is a photograph of a Spatterdock bud just peaking out of the water. Spatterdock, also known as Cowlily or Yellow Water Lily is a perennial, herbaceous, emergent aquatic plant. Its deep yellow, globe-shaped flowers grow at just above the surface of the water. The egg- to heart-shaped leaves have a basal V-notch and usually float on the surface of the water.
First I screwed the Singh-Rey 77mm Warming Circular Polarizer to the front of the lens (with the hood removed). To make the image, I set the tripod up directly over the bud right at the lens’s minimum focusing distance as the buds are less than an inch across. I made sure to seat the tripod firmly in the mud. I had already Plamped the stem in place underwater (using a shelf bracket) to keep the bud close to perfectly still. Then I set the polarizer to dark. The bud was just cresting the surface of the water and the lens was pointed straight down at the subject.
Great Macro Tip
If you are all set up but find that your subject is a bit too large in the frame or that you are slightly inside of the minimum focusing distance of the lens, simply loosen the clamp and slide the plate back as much as an inch before re-tightening the clamp. Many times, you will be good to go without having to move the tripod or re-aim the lens. If you are focusing manually (as is usually best when doing macro photography) you will of course need to re-focus.
This image was created with the i-Phone 11+.
Image #2: Spatterdock bud
Spatterdock Bud
Above is a more traditional photo of a Spatterdock bud (and leaf). I shaded the subject with my body and then stood vey still to let the wavelets subside.
This image was created with the i-Phone 11+. The exposure was dialed down too\ prevent over-exposing the yellow petals.
Image #3: Spatterdock flower (and leaf).
Spatterdock Flower
To my eye, the Spattedock flowers are not as beautiful as the developing buds.
This image was created with the i-Phone 11+. The exposure was dialed up to prevent underexposing the subject.
This little combo is a must for macro photographers. The shelf bracket was purchased a while back at Lowe’s for 99 cents. Stick the bare end of the bracket in the dirt to keep low-growing flowers from blowing in the wind. To keep the bud in Image #1 still, I stuck the bare end of the bracket into the mud. This rig is much easier to carry around than an extra tripod … And best of all, when you are finished, simply un-clip the stem of the flower, pull the shelf bracket out of the dirt or mud, and leave everything growing as it was before you arrived.
This image was also created with the i-Phone 11+.
Image #5: The Plamped in place set-up used to create Image #1.
The Set-up
A is the heavy-duty clamp of the Wimberley Plamp II attached to the shelf bracket.
B is the shelf bracket. One end is stuck into the mud while the Plamp is clamped to the other end.
C is the stiff but flexible positionable arm.
D is the lightweight clamp used to keep the stems still. One of the clamp jaws is white, the other is black. You need to be careful where you affix it to the stem so that the clamp does not appear in the image.
The subject from Image #1 — the object of my attention — is in the yellow box just above and to the right of D.

On Wednesday morning, I headed out determined to photograph some birds and did just that. I worked two different Great Egrets on the pier railings, one from my SUV and one on foot using the pier-as-blind technique. Then again working from my Sequoia, I photographed the tame colts. All of the birds were photographed at 1200mm. It was a good morning even though I did not photograph a single flower.
Only six folks wrote a critique of my image in the Let’s Play BPN. On Doing Critiques. And the Two-way Benefits of Critiquing … blog post here. I’d urge everyone — a guy can dream, can’t he?) — not only to re-visit and try their hand at doing a critique, but to follow the link to the BPN thread of the same image (here). Why? There is so, so much to learn.
One thing that you might come away with after checking the BPN link is that I, Mr. Famouos Bird Photographer, am glad to have my work critiqued by others, even after 36 years of Avian photography. Why? The boys and girls on BPN made at least two suggestions that helped me improve the image.
In the past two days, I encountered two folks with quite different attitudes toward having their images evaluated by others.
One, after I suggested that he might wish to join BPN, e-mailed as follows: I’m cheap, and I don’t like joining groups. And I’m not that keen on (taking) criticism either. This from someone who has spent probably $100,000 on camera gear in the past year or two and rarely makes even a half-way decent image …
The other, a BPN member who professes a great desire to improve, wrote Frankly, my type-A personality felt a little exposed when you posted the (over-exposed) original to the thread. I, as many, am a little self-conscious and at times feel out of my league but I’m getting much better day by day I believe.. When I reply to his mail I will suggest that he get over it. Having your images critiqued is the best way to learn to improve your photography. And BTW, his work has been improving by leaps and bounds over the past two months.
The video for the RawDigger Flower (static subject) Exposure e-Guide by Arthur Morris and Patrick Sparkman is finished and the written portion of the guide is out for review as I type.
If you have an idea as to what is pictured in the image above, please leave a comment and be as specific as possible.
Karen Mc was the first to answer correctly when she commented in part:
#2 is an emerging Southern Magnolia.
Next was Ravi Hirekatur who wrote:
#2 looks like a close up of magnolia flower with its fuzzy sepals.
Last to the party was Stephen Aveling-Rowe. He posted:
#2 resembles a magnolia of some description with it’s bud-cap. I am reasonably certain that the brown hairy part was the covering for the developing bud.
My reply to his comment:
Yes, those are the sepals.
As far as Image #1, there were some comical answers but none that are even close. I was worried that lots of folks would identify it in zero point one seconds … The answer will be revealed here soon.
On Tuesday, I left my house early on a clear, still morning intent on doing birds. I worked a nice adult crane from my SUV at 840mm and spotted a gorgeous fresh juvenile Tricolored Heron foraging in a damp area. But the grass was too tall and I wound up zero for 50 on the handsome young heron. I did spot my first young Osprey of the season flapping its wings atop the nesting tower. It should be flying soon. The truth be told I have not been looking too hard. I worked a large white flower — White Morning Glory — on a vine and struck out there as well.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I forgot to mention that on Sunday past I swam 100 lengths instead of my daily 66.
Selling Your Used Photo Gear Through BIRDS AS ART
With the pandemic and the down economy, the market had been somewhat depressed but sales have been brisk for the past few weeks. You can see all the currrent bargains here on the Used Gear Page.

I have always loved the lenses in this class. The Nikon version was a lot sharper than the Canon 24-105. It is a versatile multi-purpose lens with a thousand uses. I keep my SONY 24-105 on the front seat of my SUV every day and use it often. The 24-120 sells new right now for $1,096.95. Grab Artie’s pretty much new lens to save a cool $610.00! artie

Tracking Flexible Spot (M) AF-C was active at the moment of exposure and performed to perfection, even when shooting through the heavy rain.

Sandhill Crane in Torrential Downpour
Aside from keeping your gear dry, the trick in heavy rain is to vary your shutter speeds in the 1/125 to 1/400 sec. range. The length of the blurred streaks will depend on how hard the rain is coming down and the distance to the subject. Once you have the right exposure be sure to try different shutter speeds. For more on shooting in the rain see the Photographing Birds in Heavy Downpours During Thunderstorms. Learn About Protecting Your Gear and the Best Shutter Speeds … blog post here.
On Doing Critiques
Many folks feel that they are not qualified to do critiques. From where I sit, nothing could be further from the truth. Take a good look at an image. What do you like about it? What don’t you like? What are the strengths and weaknesses? Can you think of how the image could have been improved in the field? At the computer? If there is nothing good about an image, do your best to come up with at least one positive. A good critique does not require at least one suggestion for improvement or one negative. Try to be both honest and gentle. Write it all down and you have a great and honest critique.
Let’s Play BPN
Whether you have done hundreds of critiques or have never done one in your life, I ask that you write a short critique of today’s featured image and post it as a comment.
The Two-way Benefits of Critiquing
Aside from attending a BIRDS AS ART Instructional Photo-Tour (IPT), having your images critiqued is the single best way to improve your photography. And critiquing others’ images can be equally powerful. As a co-founder and now sole owner of BirdPhotographer’s.Net (BPN), I have posted 1,350 images to be critiqued by others. And I have done roughly 30,592 critiques. To this day — nearly 36 years after I began photographing birds, when I post an image, I learn something. Doubt me? After you have written and posted your critique of today’s featured image, click here to see what the folks on BPN had to say about it.
I urge you to follow the BPN link above as there is a ton to learn at every thread. And be sure to tool around both Avian and the other great BPN forums.
